Keeping Louisiana-trained doctors in the state for residency proves to be a challenge on Match Day
ealthcare practitioners celebrated their attempts Friday at trying to keep homegrown doctors in Louisiana, which they said can be a tough sell when medical students are being courted by residency training programs in other states where healthcare isn't such a constant feature on the budgetary chopping block.
The number of Louisiana's medical school students staying in-state for their residency has ticked downward over the past few years and become a concern of health care and higher education leaders, as doctors are likely to stay over the long term where they receive residency training.
LSU New Orleans saw a slight increase in the number of its students choosing to leave Louisiana, with 49 percent remaining in-state for residency. It's only the difference of a few students, as 51 percent of their students chose in-state residencies last year. But the number was as high as 63 percent in 2012.
At Tulane University School of Medicine, 27 of the 205 students graduating matched for residencies in Louisiana — the same number of students that are from the state, according to Marc Kahn, senior associate dean of student affairs at Tulane School of Medicine.

Everyone with a decent education is leaving the state, its not just doctors.

Tulane doesn't give a shite about in state students when it comes to accepting them in the first place.

Maybe it has something to do with the retarded politics of the urban areas?
Look at your air rights taxes for the French Quarter, Mitch. WTF.

I can't imagine making doctor money and deciding to live in La.
doesn't make a lick of sense.

Because the cost of living in Louisiana is so much more favorable than alot of other metropolitan areas.
750K gets you a 1,500 sq ft house in the no-where burbs of San Fran.
Frik that.
If you can tolerate the many trade offs of living here, it is an easy choice for some.

That's approaching New Orleans prices

My point is that a physician or surgeon's salary goes a heck of alot further in Louisiana than it does in alot of other major metropolitan areas. Some doctors and other allied health professionals move here for that very reason.

You do realize this is just residency and most want to return to LA after that? Most like the idea of moving away for 3-5 years for some things new and then returning to work

Did residency elsewhere and came back. Its home. Luckily I make lots of money and have 12 weeks vacation so I leave a lot.

I may still come back when it's all said and done. I haven't decided where I want to end up after residency

Happening in all fields. The cream of the crop is leaving the state.

I've had 8 friends go through residency outside of Louisiana. Not a single one moved back or has plans to move back.
