I saw this train pass through Baton Rouge this afternoon. Anybody know anything about this ?
Do they offer a regular service and where does it go?
It was a nice looking train and brought back some memories of seeing those years ago.

There's one that leaves somewhere around here in the afternoon and arrives in Chicago in the morning.
A Coworker with an aversion to flying considered using it. If I remember correctly, it's less expensive than flying.

It is a decent little trip from Bham to Nola. About 6-7 hours. We took it a few years ago since we'd never traveled by train before. Longer than driving but you can relax and drink.

It doesn't go through Kansas City but it's an awesome time.

FYI - this was not an Amtrak train...3 passenger train engines, passenger train cars, a dining car and baggage car...all in KCS colors/logo.

I saw a couple of custom Pullmans being pulled behind the Amtrak yesterday headed into Hammond...
don't have the NY Times link handy, but one of their columnists recently made a trip from Chicago to NOLA on the Pullman....very pricey trip, but the lap of luxury...
railroads still own a few private coaches...used to see them all the time at DC Union Station...Norfolk Southern has a couple of really good looking ones...

I rode the City of New Orleans from Hammond to Chicago and back about 20 years ago. I liked it.

Patron has a couple of old pullmans they restored and haul around, I went to a party on them during last super bowl in new Orleans, pretty damn nice

I would much rather take the train than a plane if I have the time.

Isn't Amtrak Government subsidized?

State, not Federal, I believe.

In May 1995 the new president of the railroad, Michael Haverty, ordered the creation of an executive train to entertain shippers and guests. Under his direction, four former Canadian National locomotives, three EMD FP9As and an F9B units were purchased and painted a very dark green, similar to the paint scheme of the business fleet. Numbered 1-4 and named Meridian, Shreveport, Pittsburgh, and Vicksburg, they were placed into executive service. In 2007, KCS changed the paint scheme to the more traditional and "heritage" paint scheme. The locomotive #4 was also removed from service, and later renumbered 34 and donated to the Kansas City Union Station Rail Experience. In December the train pulls the Santa Express, and it makes the rounds to several KCS cities and stations.

Most of these old freight lines (i.e., KCS) used to run passenger service. Unfortunately, Amtrak was granted a government monopoly on that and they no longer do.
However, most of he old lines still keep a small fleet of old passenger cars online for PR/corporate event type purposes. That's probably what you saw.

The City of New Orleans runs from NO to Chicago.
The Sunset Limited run east west from NO to the west coast through south Louisiana.
Both are run by Amtrak.
