Don't buy from an actual store. Either a wholesaler or online

Gotcha. I'm in the minority in that I picked one out. I mean....we knew we were getting engaged at some point, so this whole "oh the ring is a surprise!" was just silly IMO. Esp for a piece of jewelry I'm gonna wear the rest of my life. We picked it out together and found the ring we both loved.

I just wanted the when and where and how of the proposal to be a surprise and romantic and to suit my personality. And it was.

Spend some time researching them. My fiance spent about 8 months on it before he finally found all the diamonds for the ring, and it is absolutely perfect.

Also, I was totally surprised by the proposal and the ring, and I really appreciated that. But I know other girls that pick out their ring, go with the guy to buy it, and are just as happy. So it's really about what she wants.

We went ring shopping together to get an idea of what she wanted and liked. Ends up getting the ring six months later and surprising her. Don't buy from retail, goo with a wholesaler or online like someone else says. I got an $18k ring for $9.5k, plus you don't have to pay sales taxes.

My fiance's friends all hate the rings they were given because they were not asked ahead of time, whereas she told me more times than I could count exactly what she wants.

As a result she has a ring she can't stop gawking at and I have an incredibly pleasant fiance.
