Don't worry.,,,there may still be some hope.
After he finishes his commitment to the formalized welfare system know as the U.S. Army, he can join the Marine Corps!
Of course, he will still have to attend recruit training at MCRD, but it will definitely be worth it.

22 years ago Dec 17th I didn't have the courage to tell my old man I'd pissed off his money and flunked out of school.
I left for recruit training without a word leaving a letter telling them what I'd done. 13.5 weeks later my father's face was the first thing I recall seeing as we marched across that parade deck. Afterwards he handed me a letter with his words... Which have helped carry me through 7 combat deployments and countless wtf moments.
He will remember your words and will appreciate them even more after he's completed boot camp. He will be proud, but you'll be even more so. He'll reflect back on them wether he's in for 4 or 44.
Best of luck to your boy. He has already made you proud.

He is going to Jackson, you shouldn't worry. And usually they have two days of orientation before going down range. He should be able to call you tomorrow or the next day. If you mean he actually goes down range tomorrow, prolly 8 weeks before you can talk to him, atleast at Benning that's how it was.
As far as what can happen at basic to worry about....plenty. get hurt and get discharged. Freak out during a live fire and get hurt or even killed. Lots of things can happen though they are rare and measures are in place to minimize the risk.
Tell your son thank you and try and enjoy it. They can't hit you, only make you better at exercise. 15 years ago I was in his shoes and freaking a little, after two weeks I realized the above statement and though miserable at times, it became fun. If you let it though, the shite can eat you up inside.

And there is a difference between recruit training and boot camp.

That changed fast. They were still taking it to the wood line 20 years ago at Benning. Fall out of a ruck if you want to, you won't like the results.
