Got stung on the leg a few years ago by one of those. The pain was on pare with a yellow jacket but a different kind of pain. It was a weird kind that seemed to travel through my body.

eta, I seem to remember like a cold sweat like when a fever breaks.

Puss Caterpillars. I was 12. One stung me on the upper left arm. I had never before experienced such excruciating pain. - it lasted for hours. 5 decades and six years later, I have had no physical pain so terrible as that was. Never. And hope I never do again.

Here's the opinion of one, he let himself get bitten by all of them. No caterpillars on it though. Or water beetles. I was collecting a water beetle for a biology class and grabbed it with my hand. It eclipsed any pain I've ever had, though it didn't last nearly as long as a caterpillar.

I've been around bullet ants in central and south america a good bit. They terrify me.

The puss caterpillar, or woolly slug, is the most poisonous caterpillar in the United States. Its poison is hidden in hollow spines among its hairs. This hairy caterpillar is found in the southern states, ranging west through most of Texas and north to Maryland and Missouri. It feeds on shade trees such as elm, oak, and sycamore. Puss caterpillars vary in size from 1.2 in. (32 mm) to 1.4 in. (36 mm).

Symptoms of puss caterpillar contact may include:

Immediate, intense pain that often comes in waves.
A swelling, itching rash of red blotches and raised ridges.
Restlessness and anxiety.
Nausea and vomiting.
Fever.
Muscle cramps.
Swollen glands.
Symptoms of shock.

The amount of pain I'm experiencing is simply unbelievable....and the muscle spasms are insane. Got me on my bicep and finger. So much for my relaxing Sunday afternoon.

Yeah I've seen two patients in the last year that gone stung by that caterpillar and they were miserable for hours.

I do so “feel your pain” because I experienced it. There is nothing that prepares you for the speed of its onset, and the lasting intensity of it. Shock would have been a real possibility-I remember feeling arm breaking pressure and chills and lethargy in waves. I was 12 but I cried like a baby it hurt so bad and for so long. If it happens again ever, I’m off to the ER. Wish my Mom had taken me back then.
Good luck- I truly hope your pain is subsiding.

I got stuck by one on my hand while hanging Christmas lights on my roof 3 years ago. I couldn't get off my roof bc I thought I was having a heart attack... entire arm, shoulder, and chest side felt like a giant boulder was on them. Throbbing, hot, almost lost consciousness. It subsides after an hour or so...

I've seen it happen. Those hooves are badass weapons and they can decapitate a snake with a good hop.
