I grew up in Baton Rouge with the big black caterpillars. They hurt when they sting. This Puss Moth caterpillar sting is on a whole different level of pain....holy crap!

I used to have nightmares as a child about stinging caterpillars. The most frequent one I had was that my entire backyard was covered in them and I had to make it out of my backyard by jumping from spot to spot that wasn't covered with them.

People out here don't even know what stinging caterpillars are...they think I'm making that shite up when I tell them about em.

Well, been married twice, too, so obviously I'm a two lesson learner.

Me and my friends used to handle the buck moth caterpillars like Pentecostals and snakes. I don't remember why we did it, just that I stopped after I got stung. I also stopped participating in rock wars around that age.

My condolences.

When I was a kid I got got by a Saddleback.

I've been biten by too many snakes to count, the largest being a 6 1/2 ft. rat snake, and I'd take a dozen hits from a snake over a sting from one of the many badass caterpillars.

Catching snakes.

I'm a bit more careful now, but when I was a kid I didn't care. Snakes don't like to get caught, and when I was young you'd just make the grab anywhere you could so they wouldn't get away. Nowadays I'm more likely to go for the head grab, and definitely pin the head first if venomous. Snake bites are really not that bad usually - most are just quick hits that just sting a little. Occasionally you get one that latches on like it's going to eat your hand, and those can be a tad bit worse.

ETA: ironically, my Saddleback caterpillar sting was at the snake farm on old Hwy. 90 in Slidell back in the day.

Better you than me, baw. Snakes are the reason I trust mongooses (mongeese?) and goats.
