A federal jury awarded $23.1 million on Wednesday to a 22-year-old black man who was unarmed when he was shot and paralyzed by a sheriff’s deputy, but Florida lawmakers will have to approve any award above $200,000.
The six-woman, two-man jury ruled after 3½ hours of deliberation that Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Sgt. Adams Lin violated Dontrell Stephens’ civil rights when he shot him in September 2013.
Lin, who had stopped Stephens for riding his bicycle into traffic, testified that he shot him four times because he reached for his waistband with his left hand and then flashed a dark object that he thought was a small handgun. Stephens testified that he was raising his hands when Lin opened fire for no reason. Video from the dashboard camera in Lin’s patrol car showed Stephens’ left hand was empty and a cellphone was in his right hand.

Correct your thread title. He was not shot by the sheriff. Rather a sheriff's DEPUTY. Huge diff, sport.
Idk how people continually mix the two up. So dumb.

The sheriff shot him!! Jesus H. Christ Florida, what we gonna do with you...

I doubt any lawmakers will oppose approving the judgement. Not if they want to be reelected ever again. Could you imagine the media backlash if they deny the judgement

Good thing you were here to correct him. This changes the story completely!

Not sure, but they still have to get a bill passed by the FL legislature for PBSO to satisfy the judgment. I thought it was pretty telling that they offered $1.5 m before trial. The Rthe epublican legislature will probably at least give $1.5 million.

I think the legislature will make PBSO fund or partially fund any settlement anyway. Sheriff Bradshaw is always crying for more tactical assault helicopters to get marijuana off the streets.

He's lucky he wasn't shot by a Manitowoc County deputy or else he would have already been framed for murder.

I imagine Dontrell's family is sitting in a financial advisor's office right now so they can formulate a plan to deal with this money in a proper manner.

He's paralyzed. Most of that is probably for a lifecare plan.

You say the Sheriff,
But I hear it was the deputy...
Watched the video. It looks like he was turning when the shots were fired.
What happened outside of the video.
And on what planet was he going to contribute 23.1 million dollars worth of positive production to the community.

Not very much money at all. Would you get paralyzed if someone offered you 20mill?

He was awarded $6,450,000 for medical expenses, $10,626,000 for pain and suffering and the remaining $6 million plus for mental distress and humiliation.
The firm that got him this verdict has a few OT baller trial lawyer magicians. The attorney on this one, Jack Scarola, hit Sunbeam for $1 billion on a shareholder suit a few years ago (overturned on appeal), but the head guy Chris Searcy hits $50m to $100m verdicts on the reg. There is a motion in limine floating around precluding Searcy from crying during closing arguments, usually on baby death cases and whatnot. He is a master.
Sounds like the jury here just gave them whatever they asked for.

1) so you're saying the pd shouldn't have to pay X dollars because they person they paralyzed wouldn't contribute that much to society ... fair enough ... the gov shoots you and kills you for no reason, how much that worth to punish the government? ... $5 million? ... $10 million? ...
2) guy had a record for cocaine ... that what you're basing the financial worth on? ...
