Glenn flew 149 combat missions in World War II and Korea, where his wingman and eventual lifelong friend was baseball legend Ted Williams. In Korea, Glenn earned the nickname “Old Magnet arse” due to his skill in landing his airplane under any condition, even after it was riddled with bullets and had blown tires.

Those guys were intelligent and had balls of steel. Not many made like that any more.

RIP.

And then there were none. Symbolic of the WWII generation passing, the last of the Mercury 7 astronauts, John Glenn (however much I disagreed with him politically over the last 40+ years), was a legitimate, bona fide American hero.

He was the oldest of the Mercury 7, the only Marine (3 were USAF and 3 were USN), the third to fly, the first (American) to orbit and the last to pass away.

God speed, John Glenn.

Great movie.

And John Glenn was one hell of a fine American.

Rest in Peace.

I won't take away his service to America as a Marine or as a cutting edge astronaut in the early days of manned spaceflight.

His story is tainted by recent history due to political ties.

He didn't really die, he just went to hell to regroup like all Marines.
