They'll probably hire somebody who wrote this:

"I'm black so I am very diverse already."

I've thought about

"I'm a redhead and make up only 2% of the world's population, I'd bring some real diversity to the department. Oh, and don't call me ginger, that's our word." But I don't know if that would fly.

Yeah.. I was just kind of alluding to what diversity has become a code word for.

I had a black guy tell me once that the high school he went to was diverse because it was 90% black and the rest were mexicans.

I believe you and most of this board misunderstood the question. It's just an odd way of asking "what do you as an applicant bring to the table that isn't like every single person who applies." I seriously doubt they want answers about race. They want you talking about how you are unique. And if you answer it write, it's a fricking goldmine of an answer.

I got a similar question on a job application the other day. "What are your 'special skills''. Like what? What's the difference between skills and special skills? How do I know what of my skills are common against my competition?

Uh no. This has nothing to do with me or my uniqueness. The university's guidelines for writing a diversity statement specifically states to think about under previleged and under represented groups to promote a "one world" vision. It says to consider minorities, gays, lesbians, transgenders, handicapped, etc
