Gotcha, I've read stuff saying either way tbh. Guess it's just a personal preference. I don't offroad that often in my jeep and have always hated driving manuals. Any offroading I'm doing isn't gonna be crazy rock climbing anyways cause this is my DD. It's been so long though..I would need my husband to be reteach me how to use the 4x4 shifter in my jeep

My husband is like you and only will drive manuals, no matter what vehicle he owns. Had to specially order his Rubicon because he wanted a manual(and they are more difficult to find nowadays in the general stock of jeeps on a dealership lot).

If you know how to use the clutch you don't.

This is still my favorite. As seen in Baton Rouge. I'm convinced it's a rantard's Jeep.

ok. you win. For easier trails, manual transmissions are fine. For tougher trails, you'll find the hardcore trail machines are mostly automatics.
Plus you get 2-3X greater low-end torque from an automatic transmission's torque converter.

I drive an automatic now, but only because I don't off-road. When I was younger I had a manual and went off roading all the time.

As far as shifting into 4x4, there's probably an instruction sticker on one of your visors, if not, then you can just shift it into 4x4 while in neutral or in drive while stopped or at low speeds (under 35) on most vehicles. Obviously you would want to consult your owners manual. Bit you really should put it in 4 wheel from time to time, even if you don't need it. At least that's what I've always been told. Maybe it's bullshite.

And manual vs automatic...again I've read that those that hardcore offroad actually prefer automatic

Automatic felt so lifeless when I test drove one. The manual has a great anti-stall assist if you need it offroad and I haven't had any issues yet - only shitty thing is 6th and reverse get a bit confusing from neutral sometimes if I hit N on the highway

That 2 door lineage tho

This!

I've seen similar claims about auto's and off-roading, except the exact words were "off-roading can be easier with an automatic." I'll never agree that easier is always better. Buying fish from a market is easier than fishing. Is buying fish better than catching it yourself? If you say yes, you'd probably want an automatic off-road.

Agree to disagree.

Matter of preference I guess.

I would agree the manual is more fun for southern offroading but if I was going down this I doubt I would like a manual

have you ever used it offroading.

I used it once in my 2010 raptor and didn't like it. I got scared and went back to manual

It seems like going down that, you'd prefer a manual. I hate not having one when driving up and down hills.

Well, heel/toe says you need to press all three at once.

My Jeep is a manual, FWIW, but a lot of guys that do serious crawling like automatics.

Can't argue with that I guess.

I just can't think of anytime I was off roading and thought, damn I wish I had an automatic.
