Texting while driving is OOC. It is so second nature to people I routinely see LEOs texting while at traffic lights etc.
Eta: ATL has billboards popping up "I sue texting drivers"

It's definitely getting worse. More than 99% of the time, you can text while driving and be fine. Like you say though, all it takes is a split second situation. Hopefully for most people, they get in a minor fender bender and learn their lesson rather than it being the last mistake they ever make.
I notice it the most going home on an interstate that is usually congested with cars going 25-50 MPH. The drivers are thinking 'well, I'm only going 30 MPH and following a line of cars so I'm going to look at Tigerdroppping for a quick minute'. Then, a car will suddenly brake and get rear-ended by the texter. I've seen it happen twice in the lane right next to me (in past year) and another time on a different highway.
About three months ago, I heard a sports radio host mention that he was at a stop light (3rd in line) so he decided to look at his phone. He glanced up a bit later and noticed that the light was turning yellow and looked at the cars around him. Everyone was looking at their phones so nobody even noticed to honk at the front cars when the light turned green.
I'm really hoping that self driving cars will be around by the time my kids start driving (3-5 years from now).

People have been texting for the past decade but (IMO) it's worse now with everyone having smart phones and posting/browsing social media.

It is horrible.
Next time you're at a red light, look at one of the lanes get a green. It used to be that the light would turn green and mostly everyone would let off the brake at the same time. Nowadays, you have to wait for the first person to glance up and then realize the light is green, then the second person, the third, and so on. Because of this, 2-3 less people make it through light cycles.
Other people's texting has extended my daily commute because I'm not making it through light cycles that I should have made it through.

They are always in the left lane with the cruise control on (going 2 MPH over the speed limit) and they don't have to be bothered with merging traffic.

I almost get wiped out all the time by these pricks. I really need to invest in an armored truck

But but we need to pass a law to ban texting and driving! People will surely stop!
We didn't need to pass texting laws, just enforce the reckless driving laws already on the books.

OOC. This will continue to kill people. DWI is unacceptable, but at least a drunk is TRYING to stay in his lane and pay attention (unless he's drunk AND texting). Testers just plain ARENT paying attention. Hell, may as well just close your eyes and drive into shite. Somethings gotta be done.

Statistics show that the dead bodies are stacking higher and trending higher.
Doesn't matter. No matter how high the dead bodies stack, people will NOT put the smartphone away while on the road.

When the 18 wheel truck drivers do this on our awful highways in Mississippi, I stay clear.

People have become technological zombies. They need the constant visual stimulation and interactivity. It's an addiction that will likely get worse before it gets better.

Man I've been so drunk that I'd have one eye squeezed shut and squinting the other one trying to see straight, with the A/C on ice cold turned full blast and the radio blaring, and still can't stay awake. Fortunately I'm a drunk who retains his senses so I'd pull off the road to a secluded spot and sleep/sober up a little. With phones, there is no sobering up.

Looking into everyone's car while driving is not safer than texting while driving
