Ok, so how do you stop a felon from going buy a gun whenever he wants?
A felon should only be free once he has paid his debt to society and poses no risk. At that point his rights should be restored.
Felons who pose a risk should not be in society.

is against the law for felons to own firearms.
If anyone can buy a gun over the counter no questions asked how could you ever enforce this?

Violent convicted felons who still pose a risk to society should not be allowed back into society.
Oh ok. Glad this never happens ever.

So you want to build our society based on lala land idealistic society principles and not reality?
I honestly don't even know where to start with this.

THIS! And we've got to evolve to somehow keep in context while also working to improve where possible and reasonable.

But what's their stance on gun control and background checks

If a person still poses a risk, why is he not still incarcerated?
Myriad reasons that no one wants to address but would rather put their faith in a feel good background check system that isn't even being enforced.

It's already been established. Time to move on.
The real problem is that every time something like this happens, there's a push for more gun control, and some are ignorant enough to believe that is the solution.

Reality is that the laws on the books aren't being enforced now.

Because he did his time.
If I walk into your house right now, beat the shite out of you, rape your wife, then set your house on fire, I'd go to jail. Not for life. And after I've served that sentence I can get out, buy a gun at a gun show, and kill you and your family.

How do we determine to release people now?
How often do all of you read about criminals who were paroled and went on to commit crimes once released? Particularly sex offenders. Why are we not looking at how that is happening and what can be done to strengthen that system?

You do understand that people are not sentenced to "jail until proven rehabilitated" right?
Do you not understand the basics of the prison system?

What the frick does any of this have to do with gun control?

I would offer than sentencing guidelines aren't harsh enough and that is one of the root problems that isn't being addressed.
BTW, there is zero, ZERO, chance that closing the so called 'gun show loophole' would work without universal firearms registration. And that won't happen.

And you think gun shows are the problem in this scenario?

I understand enough to know it is not working. And if you think 'rehabilitation' isn't a common mantra of people in the penal world then you aren't as well versed on this top as you want to appear to be.
There is a decay in society right now that will not be fixed by gun control. Hardly anyone wants to look at those problems because they are so big.

Gun shows are the new boogeyman. Even though they largely suck.

so at the end of your 10 year sentence, a shrink determines if you get to spend another 10?
I'm just trying to understand all this and form more of an opinion. I've always been of the thought that gun laws will only hurt the people who follow the law. But, I'd be willing to hear logical, rational opinions on the other side. Most of these sensationalized shootings would never be "controlled" unless you're just completely stripping guns from people. If i'm wrong, somebody please explain what kind of legislation would stop or at least make it really hard for someone to shoot up a school, theater or a journalist and her cameraman

quote:Exactly, and I think that would lead to the constant lowering of the standards bar as to what is considered "unfit."
this is a good point. Seems that most crimes are committed by two types of people. For lack of a better description, "Criminal criminals" & people who "just crack". The first will get guns no matter what you do, the second will have either already own a gun cause they've been, up to this point, normal or they'll pass any check because they haven't done anything YET.
They want a gun ban, plain and simple, and I refuse to be ruled over by the police/military and the criminal underworld, the only two gun-toting entities that would be left.
