Is there ever a good situation to tell your boss you're looking for a job?

Or to tell them you are interviewing with another employer?

Generally, no. If you both know a layoff is coming, then it's no big deal.

Don't say shut until a job is offered, accepted, and all background checks are cleared.

I thought that what 2 week notices were for. Why would I tell my current employer I was going to look for another job then frick around and get fired? Wait till you have a start date at your new employer then tell your current employer thanks for the opportunity.

I believe the answer to that is no, unless you know that you are likely to be laid off, and doing so allows you to enlist your boss or other advocates at your company to help you find a new role.

In the gray area I would put a situation where you've brought certain concerns to the attention of your employer and have given them time to remedy the situation, but nothing has been done. But, it is a hard "no" if you're a terrible employee and the reason they haven't remedied them is because they don't care if you stay or leave.

Sure. When you've already left the upper-decker, and stolen the laptops.

For Normal people I doubt it.

Someone I work with had a wife get a great Dr gig in another city. He let the company know so they had forewarning and allowed him to stay on to train someone. They helped him with contacts

Somewhat similar situation to a friend of mind who moved home since his widowed mom got cancer or something

Only if you are planning to move out of state and the boss knows about the move in advance.

In general no, but sometimes it doesn't hurt for your boss to think you might leave.

I have used multiple times my boss being scared I was going to quit to get things i wanted. Most recently my boss let me take a 3 week vacation, even though that is generally not allowed.

He knows he is completely 100% fricked if I quit. while I am not irreplaceable, it would be a challenge that he doesn't want.

If you're wanting to get a position working for the Mets but need to get fired from the Yankees first, then maybe.

The love it. Especially when they find the resume you left on the fax machine. Boom, "You're Fired!"

Happened to folks twice at my old job.

This is when it might be ok. Ideally if a layoff is coming, you look for a new job and get interviews/offers, then tell your boss that you have options and are volunteering yourself to be laid off. Then you get laid off, take a fat severance check and move on to your better job.

I would think it is a rare situation.

I did it once, but it was at a time when I was working for a hospital and I was applying for a job at the corporate health system that the hospital was under. I told my boss at the time that I was interviewing and she tried to convince me not to do it and then told me that she hoped I didn't get the job. I got the job and it's been the best thing that's happened to my career.

I've also had a weird situation where my manager once pulled me into her office and told me that she saw more potential in me than to be working this job. She told me that admin at the place I was working at were only making 60k, and if I wanted to make more than that I should probably look for something with more room to grow. She didn't know it at the time, but I was already looking for another job.
