My lab has severe anxiety triggered by the weather, especially thunderstorms. It is just getting worse as she gets older. If we're home, we will let her in the utility room until it passes. Today, though, we were all at work when the thunderstorm came, and I got home from work to find my front door severely damaged by her trying to get in. Is there something that can be given to her to calm her in these situations? It's out of control.

Yeah, they have dog Xanax that they give for situations like that. It basically just knocks them out

Just explain the storm thing to the vet, it's not uncommon. It's not something you give them daily though so it won't do much good if nobody is home and it storms

My brother's Pomeranian took xanax for dogs because it self-mutilated by eating its own paws. They had to tie boots on the paws to prevent it from doing it.

One day they came home and found the dog had taken the boots off and gnawed its paws off. They had to put it down.

Yes, there are a few.

Zylkene is a natural, milk casein supplement that has been shown to alleviate stress in dogs. They can also prescribe Xanax or Trazodone. My littlest dog gets trazodone when she's stressed.

ETA: There are also products like Adaptil collars that have shown to be effective.

Yes, my Fianceé's lab takes Prozac everyday for anxiety. He's useless.

I've heard from a vet you can give them low doses of actual xanax.

I go the Benadryl route.

Girl I worked with had a few greyhounds, she tried a "thundershirt", she said the dog ripped it to shreds during a storm...

Our lab has the same issues and thunder shirts, Benadryl and Prozac had very little effect. The only thing that works is doggy diazepam.
