re: Is there a more undesirable job than being a police officer in this country?

There are decent cops out there but I suspect even they contribute to the problem by not being willing to speak up when they see one of their fellow officers behaving badly. So the bad ones get to keep up their antics and make a bad name for all. Plus if you spend your entire day dealing with citizens who are only borderline civilized it's easy to fall into an "us vs. them" mentality.
So I think it's less of a problem with the kind of person who wants to be LEO than it is the working environment and institutional support. If I worked in NBR every day I wouldn't be a great person to deal with before long. And that is even before considering the money isn't much.

As some recent events have demonstrated--Charleston, SC for example--this is not necessarily a bad thing. Exposing law breaking policemen--those who are sworn and paid to uphold our laws--is in every citizen's interest is it not?

Well I can tell you what he wouldn't do. He wouldn't give me a paid vacation where after months and months of investigation, my viewing was justified, even after the "investigation" saw the facts and decided not to prosecute. He certainly wouldn't count on HR not prosecuting out of fear my agency would stop supporting him. Lastly he wouldn't have to worry about me going to another company where they will simply continue the same behavior that got me canned to begin with.

Questionaire:
1) Do you have a small penis?
2) Did you get picked on in high school?
If you answered yes to both then police officer is a very desirable job for you.
In all seriousness, cops should all wear body cams. That way they are held accountable and are protected against frivolous claims.

According to teachers being a teacher is basically the equivalent of living in a gulag. A gulag with 3 months of poolside sitting, but a gulag nonetheless.

you get to bully people, murder people, murder dogs, and do lots of reprehensible things with impunity. whats not to like?

If I'm reckless and unprofessional in my job, I get fired. Why is that any different for cops?

do you want to kick peoples arse? do you like to frick with people for fun? do you want the chance to murder someone and get away with it?
Now there are plenty of good policemen out there but there is a subset that these questions are a yes. My problem with the police is when they protect these types from investigation and prosecution.

I disagree. Yes, the chances are nil that if you have an education you will become one, but for those that do not have an education these people seem to absolutely love their jobs. I hardly see a garbage man that looks unhappy while doing their jobs. Maybe it's being outside in the weather, getting a workout and getting paid to do it?

I watched a Natgeo show about Bacardi last weekend. The people employed to taste test the rum have a pretty legit job.

There are bad cops just like there are in any profession. That said, with everyone having a cell phone video recorder and the over-zealousness to paint any issue as racist, now every Tom, Dick and Harry has the opportunity to play "Monday Morning QB" when it comes to actions taken by cops.
As the OP said, these guys literally risk their lives dealing with worthless POS's, some who are very dangerous, on a daily basis. It's going to get to a point where many of the good cops just decide it's not worth the risks to do the job anymore.

Pay is pretty damn good for some of them. In my area, almost all of them make close to 80k and every single sergeant and captain is in the six figures. In base pay only. In fact the total cost of an average cop here is $148k a year.

In a deposition video, Officer Edward McGovern shows how he shot an unarmed man standing on a roof. The city paid $150,000 in a wrongful death settlement.
In Hallandale Beach, police officers are being paid salaries far above the national average, despite being a department riddled with controversial shootings, beatings, and huge payouts to victims of police brutality. And for cops involved in those payouts, subsequent promotions and awards are not uncommon.

Sounds great. Working full time in a cubicle is really harder work overall, when you think about it.

I think this is a lot of the reason why we keep seeing these hot heads get in trouble. The quality of person that used to be a cop is now smart enough to stay out of the profession. The same can be said with politicians.

They should probably start making it a requirement for cops to have college degrees
