I always remember hearing my dad tell ole fraternity stories from back in they day and he frequently described some of his brothers as "coonasses". I never really looked deep into the meaning i just thought it sounded cool. He always said it in an endearing manner.

How many coonasses we got here, Baw?Also TRUMP '16

One time i got called an a-hole for referring to a girl as mexican... She is from mexico! Her parents work at a mexican restaurant!

I would never be offended by being called an american... It amazes me how the actual term turns derogatory...

I work with a girl that refers to her boyfriend as Spanish, I say "oh wow, I love spain!" Turns out he is Honduran... Only thing Spanish about him is his language.

Not at all. I get called a crazy coonass on a regular basis at work. It's not offensive.

Not to me. In fact, I'm more likely to buy you a beer if you call me that.

To most, it isn't offensive and like others have said, I see it as a term of endearment.

To some older Cajuns, it is more like the N-word. They can call each other that but you better not say it.

I went to elementary school in Lockport- I can remember a conversation on the playground where the theme was:

"If you don't admit to being a cooass and are proud of it, you're gonna get your arse kicked"

So yeah, I'd say....especially if you are from Bayou Lafourche, it's something to be proud of.

I see all the people saying no, and I agree it doesn't offend me at all, but it used to be a very offensive word. I wish my grandparents were still around to explain why, but back when they were kids and my great grandparents were alive, it used to be used like the "N" word towards Cajun french people.

As it was said in Clerks though, we took it back.

I don't see why it would offend someone, especially if they fall under the definition.

Kind of like if someone would call you a flaming queer cock smoker.

I never was really sure of the exact reference.I worked with a guy from Gretna and some guys at work called him a coonass.

I was led to believe that it was a white person from Louisiana.

Wild- I know its confusing. They look at their ancestry I believe. If they come from Spanish ancestry they consider themselves Spanish. If their ancestry is Honduran, for example, they consider themselves Honduran. The Spanish ones tend to look down at the locals or "indians".
