Empty nester's now and thinking about buying a RV. Wife is all for it. I love to drive and wife loves to sleep. I think it would be nice to cruise the country.

Thoughts? Opinions?

How about you rent one for a bit and see if you like it?

Maybe it will work for you. I'd last about an hour in something of that size with my wife there as well.

Rent one and give it try a few times. I have a cousin who is retired and loves it. He doesn't take long trips for the most part.

This might not be the perfect time to ask someone to accompany you on your new van life experiment.

I think I would like it but that’s a big investment if I decided I hated it after a few weeks.

Wife (no pics) and I had the same idea 10 years ago, seeing how people drive on the highways now changed our minds on those plans.

Rent one for a bit to see how you like it. If you both do like it, then buy one.

ETA: Go to YouTube and search "Steve Lehto RV". People are very quick to point out the positives of owning an RV. Lehto has no issue stating the negatives.

Our neighbors have young kids, and they love the RV life. Seems like they go somewhere fun every weekend.

My parents (empty nesters) had this idea and rented one for a trip. They enjoyed it but decided against buying one in the end. I agree with those saying to try renting first.

I plan on doing it in about 7-8 years

Go for it

Remember this though, if you don’t use it often, you are way better off financially just staying in nice hotels and dining in restaurants

My grandparents have travelled all of the country in an RV. They didn’t regret a second of it. Not long before my great grandpa died, they got to bring him on a trip to Canada .

I know a guy that drives RV's for a living. Basically if someone buys an RV in a different part of the country he drives the RV there then flies home.

I always thought that would be a cool supplemental income for a retiree.

As long as you understand the costs and the downsides, go for it. Are you going to drag a car behind it?

I know people in their 30’s with a family that live full time in an RV locally. They move between four or five campgrounds during the school year. It’s a weird lifestyle, but they’re some of the happiest people I know.

Start off either renting one or try a service like RVshare which is similar to the way airbnb works but for RVs.

Also download the Spot2Nite app to find available spots to book all across the counrty.

My parents were full time RV'ers after they retired and they loved it. But we had always been a camping family - had a travel trailer since I was a little kid, so they knew what they were getting into. If you don't have a lot of experience with camping or RV'ing, I would do as other suggest and rent for a while and see if you like it enough to commit to doing it full time.

My parents owned several coach motorhomes over the years. They were nicer than my first two apartments, yeah I could live in one, especially parked near the ocean.
