I'm having a discussion with some co workers. Some are saying it is one of the safest spots in the city. Others are saying it is not safe and they only have 2 cops in the area. I have always thought it was safe when one uses common sense.

still wouldn't necessary qualify as safe just based on that accomplishment.

99% of the time it is. When the thugs come out at 2:00am, I would say it gets a little sketchy.
9 million people visited the city last year and I bet 75% of them visited the quarter.
I like to enjoy many other parts of the city and the quarter isn't really for me much these days.
I await the chicken little responses. These threads are always fun

If you had to rank the top 5 safest spots in the city would the French Quarter make your list?

It's safe unless you do something really stupid. Same can be said for any major city.

Just got back from going this weekend. Honestly it was the worst I've ever seen. No police presence, though I'm sure there were some plain clothes/undercover. The sheer amount of homeless/bums/crazies was off the charts. I bet I was solicited for money no less than 100 times over the course of the weekend. One dude even yelled at one of my kids just for looking at him. Never really felt unsafe, but the vagrant problem is definitely out of control.

generally i would say its safe but its extremely situational... all of a sudden a single white female at club razzoo's at 1:30 in morning is a little bit less than safe.

I was down there for a friends wedding a few weeks ago. The day after the wedding we were all meeting up at his parents condo in the FQ. As I was walking up, two black kids were being chased by a white kid down the street, in what I presumed was a pickpocket situation.

This. Don't get caught around the Krystal Burger after 1:30. That place gets wierd.

I think the sketchy crowd sits around the houses getting drunk and high until 1:00, then takes over the Quarter.

Racist. They were just playing Tag. The white kid was "it".

I am not saying its 100% safe but only having 2 cops is bullshite. Between the State Trooper detail and the NOPD station on Royal there are plenty of cops. Amount of police is not the issue.

Yes

Odds you are a victim of violent crime if you aren't a complete idiot is pretty damn low.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Some of your co-workers are morons. NOPD's 8th District HQ is on the corner of Conti and Royal. There always more than two cops in the area, 24/7. NOPD is also assisted by LSP in patrolling the French Quarter. If you make it two blocks down Bourbon without seeing a cop, I'd consider that to be unusual. There are cops everywhere down there.

On the other hand, there have been fights and shootings that started within 50' of a cop. Some of the riff-raff just doesn't care.

Over all I'd say no. It's a tourist spot, and a place where a lot of drunk people are stumbling around. Prime area for the type of scum that take advantage of those situations.

That being said, it can be as safe as you make it, by using common sense and keeping your wits about you.

Just remember, Sheep and wolves, You're going to be one whether you want to or not.
