I would agree to an extent, it depends on who you are. Muslim? Like it was said before, more than likely Mecca would be. Or Jeruselum for a lot of people. But that is from a religious point of view. If just looking at the worldliness, history, and majesty of a city I would agree with Paris.

I'd go with Jerusalem.
Christianity, Judaism , and Islam all hold that ancient city in the highest regard.

If reverence=importance, it's NYC and it's not close

Question is so widespread that you have to narrow it down.

I'd go with Jerusalem. I'm a Protestant believer, but admittedly a poor one in my day-to-day life. However, there is something overwhelming about laying eyes on or stepping into Jerusalem for the first time. Mostly due to the magnitude and ripple effect of what happened/supposedly happened in and around its walls, and how it affects every corner of the world today.

It's one of those places that many likely have heard so much about since before they even knew about Paris, and you can't almost believe you're there when you are. At least that's how I feel.

but when it comes to measurable tourism dollars & modern history impact I agree Paris is a great choice. The amount of tourists Paris & France bring in is out of this world.

Probably. It is the capital city of my great great great great grandfathers people.

And where the French National Rugby Team is Headquartered.

Those two reasons alone make it awesome.

It's pretty dirty now (actually it probably was dirtier in the Middle Ages) but there's no denying its heritage and cultural and historical legacy

Go to Asia, and they probably don't know that much about Paris

Have you ever been to Paris? Try to get within a stones throw of the Mona Lisa and then tell us that. Asian tourists are all over Paris. In huge numbers.

Paris might be amazing but not for the reasons you mention IMHO. Quality of life is prettying, especially if your poor. The ghettos of Paris are infamous for their crime. Also, tons of riots. Hell, I saw pictures from just a few months ago of the city on fire from a massive riot. I could name a dozen cities in Europe alone that have higher quality of life.

Also, good infrastructure doesn't mean shite if everything shuts down every few weeks because of a debilitating strike.

You could say London is more important now, especially from a financial front. London has several unique financial institutions that no one else in the world has.

I liked Paris but the people were not very friendly to us. My mom speaks fluent French and she said they were saying all kinds of nasty things.

I spent a week in Bayeux and on the Normandy coast. That is where I would prefer to visit.

As far as revered cities go, I would say Rome is probably most revered.
