re: Is disability the new retirement?

I know a teacher who lost her job and couldn't catch on anywhere else. Not surprising either, she has negative attitude about damn near everything, a smoker's rasp from a lifetime of sucking on cancer sticks, etc.
She was able to qualify for disability due to lung problems (shocker). So now she suns herself at the pool all day. She wasn't disabled enough (and didn't think she was disabled enough) to think that she couldn't teach again, she *did* search for almost two years before giving up.

I just don't see why people would want to fake an injury or illness to retire or collect a small paycheck just to skate by.

In their "logic", it's better than being homeless. Some actually think the working men are suckers. I guess they're right in some ways.

A guy that worked for my uncle for years just died from Alpha-1 and fought and fought to get disability so he could maybe quit work to fight his disease and was denied at every turn.
That's incredibly sad.

He was denied because he was still working. He would have had to quit and have no income in order to file again in order to maybe qualify. This is despite only having like 20% lung capacity confirmed by the best Alpha-1 doctors in Houston.

There is a kid in my gym who I would call "special". Full disability. Squats 500+ & dunks a basketball.

It frees up their day so they can ride around looking for scrap metal

Why do you think 97% of lawyer tv ads are about SS/ SSI ? Trolls chase money and obarry soetero blew up the dam!

I maybe forced into this soon due to health issues. Believe me I would much rather have my health back and not be in this position. I am very fearful that I won't see my kids graduate. I was hoping with medication to improve but that doesn't look likely now. People can call me what they want to but I have worked like a dog for the last thirty years I am still working but not sure how much longer I can make it.

You put in 30 years and now your health threatens your earning. THIS is what the program is for. Godspeed.

Yep, thank Obama
I thank Obama the same as I thank his predecessors since none of them did anything about it either.

How is it so easy for people to start collecting disability, besides lawyers and judges scratching each other's backs?
You don't believe all the examples on this thread do you? I have no idea about state workman's comp, but SSI is difficult to get. Kids don't get it for ADHD. Mental disability is even harder to prove. People love to repeat what they hear 3rd hand.

I have zero problems with it helping people that actually need it and that have paid into the system.

There is private disability insurance.
There is Social Security disability insurance that is also paid for by paying into Social Security.
And then their is a Medicaid type of disability that I think a disabled person may get even if they didn't pay into the system.
Which one are you talking about?

I wish everyone thought like you and Bhamtbone but I had a poster on the poli-board call me all sorts of vile names the other day when this subject came up and I haven't even signed up yet.

I've seen enough where I live to believe 1/2 the people who are on disability do not really need to be. Lots of corruption in all government circles.

Ignore them
I have no problems with any welfare programs as long as they are used to help those in need and aren't abused. Food stamps, WIC, unemployment, etc are all great ideas to help people through temporary life issues. As a society we should help each other when others are in need but sadly this isn't how it is and like everything else the bad ones ruin it for the ones that need it.
This is why so many have a bad taste about it and get upset with the slightest mention of it. Everyone's situation is different and if I ever got in the situation where I needed it, I would be grateful it was there as an option, but I would do everything I could to make it a temporary solution unless I was disabled like you.
Not everyone thinks like you or I do about it and now days it's a tool to buy votes and a lifestyle for too many. It needs revamping, but it's too far gone now for that.
TL;DR Do what you gotta do. You, unlike many, deserve it.

Its always easy for them to stand on rigid ideology when they aren't personally affected.

Nope. There's too many examples that many of us have seen firsthand to believe that. Perhaps on paper disability is hard to get, but in practice it is certainly being abused.
