Is central Florida really as trashy as people say it is?

I've never been to the central part of Florida, only the beaches of the panhandle and the Miami area, but we were thinking of taking a road trip to Tampa to see family either in the late fall or spring of next year.

I always hear people mentioning how trashy/redneck the areas around Gainsville & Ocala are, but was curious to see what's the real deal. Is it worth driving through or should I spend the $$$ and take the flight? I thought it would be cool to stop and hand out in new areas.

A good friend of mine lived there for a few years.

He called it Gonz-ampa. (Gonzales + Tampa = Gonz-ampa) If that helps.

I dated a girl from Ocala, I didn't enjoy it there. Made me miss our trash.

Don't worry too much about it: It's not just Central Florida, just all of Florida, although the degrees of trash do vary.

Tampa and St Pete are fine. As soon as you get away from the coast it gets trashier than you could ever imagine.

I pissed away a portion of my life there for work and it was beyond description. Imagine Chalmette and Livingston had a baby and then hired the professional wrestling demographic to raise it. That's central Florida.

So what you are saying is Louisiana trash is still better? I've been to some real armpits such as Ferriday and Rayne.

I wouldn't put these two in the same category. Gainesville isn't bad because of the university. Ocala, not so much.

Make sure to go through Plant City or Thonotosassa while you're down there, great places to visit.

I grew up in Gainesville. Yes, it's pretty trashy in that area. It has UF and a lot of N. Fla trash. That's pretty much it.

How far in were you? Some towns are better than others but they all have sections that make the Denham rednecks look like debutantes.

It was an equal distance to the cost east or west. So right in the heart of it. They had an economy based on welfare, golden coral and meth. It sucked hard.
