And you didn't have the good guys vs. the bad guys like you did in the Second World War. It was the type of war Europe had been fighting for years (done as a land grab and for regional influence),, except technology reached a point that they could inflict jaw dropping losses in each other.

Was just about to post this. I had a pretty solid trivial knowledge of the war before listening but that whole podcast series completely humanized what went on. Makes WWII look like a simple game of Risk; WWI almost literally saw an entire generation slowly wiped off the map.
