Pay close attention to July 1, 1916. 18,771 Commonwealth soldiers (around 57,000 total Commonwealth casualties) were killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The last Commonwealth soldier to die in the war was a Canadian who was killed 2 minutes before the armistice went into effect.

The last American soldier to be killed is considered the last death of the war, being killed 60 seconds before the armistice went into effect.

WW2 gets so much coverage, but people have no clue what hell on earth WW1 was. It is insane how unbelievably terrible the conditions were.

Cool Site.

For those interested in WWI, check out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History series Blueprint for Armageddon He just released the sixth and final episode.

I think this might have something to do with that

U.S. WWI casualties: 320,518
U.S. WWII casualties: 1,076,245

Edit: Not trying to diminish WWI at all. Just pointing out that WWII was much more significant to the United States

Check out "The First World War From Above" on Netflix. Very interesting documentary.

I believe Michael Palin (from the Monty Python troupe) did a documentary on the British deaths at the end of the war (can't remember the name of it). Some British Generals were sending men over the top only minutes before the cease fire for absolutely no reason. Absolutely insane.

ETA: I believe the Palin doc is called "The Last Day of World War One". Looks like it's available on Youtube.

The only winners in WWI were the US and Japan. We became THE world leader during the war as all of the money flowed out of Europe right into Uncle Sams pocket.

WWI was so bad it turned the French, one of the world's historical military powers, into the simpering wine loving pacifists they are today. They didn't want anymore to do with that shite.

I've seen estimates of 1.5 billion shells fired during WWI. It's a wonder anybody survived.
