It's like I tell my employees, if you aren't the lead dog the view never changes.

I want to be very, very good. I also can diagnose when I've done my job to the best of my abilities. If I know I've done what I can, I will leave. There's a difference between productive work and being overzealous.

For example, say you were younger maybe 28-31 yrs old and were doing well at your current gig.. good $$.. supervisor position, but at a low tier.

Would you take an opportunity for a lateral move, 10K more a year to a VERY well known and exclusive company, knowing that you would be working 10-20 hrs more a week?

yep. i never stayed at a job longer than 4-5 years in my younger days and didnt give a rip where geographically i ended up as i was looking for more challenges & money.

my entire outlook on life and work has changed now and i really enjoy the culture of my company and relaxed nature of things. i would never want to be in a dog-eat-dog hyper-competitive job again.

I have always been self-employed outside of one college gig. Even when I was a Realtor it's the same as being self-employed for the most part since it's performance based so I have never had the option than to do the best to my abilities and I like hiring people on performance or subcontract status as I feel they work harder for obvious reasons.

Can't say how motivated I would be on a salary or hourly wage. I feel like the stability would be nice but also having limited room to grow and having a ceiling would kill my motivation.

Most jobs I've had actually held me back or made me lose interest after a while. Very few jobs and bosses have given me the freedom to be the best and enjoy going in as much as possible.

Money and bonuses have never been a reason for me to try harder

Don't you think that they are kind of intertwined? I'd rather my paycheck come from my hard work, rather than be gifted a paycheck for giving half-effort just because someone doesn't notice I'm not giving 100%. But that's just me

I've found that for pretty much every job there is a point you can reach where you are completely competent at what you do but are not necessarily at the frontier of the profession. It is at this point where you can choose a life of balance or choose to push onward to be at the frontier. I can't say that either type of person is right. We need both in this world.

I may be in the minority with this line of thinking but I believe you can be the best at what you do and have a great work life balance. I completely subscribe to the "work to live not live to work" saying. But I also see lots of people in my industry who probably say that to themselves to justify not only being incompetent but just sucking at their jobs.

I'm in the very early part of my career, I'm single, and I have career goals. With that being said I try and put forth the extra effort and stay late if needed, more so because I can afford to right now.

Ultimately I want to be the best at my job, but i'm not willing to sacrifice working/personal relationships to get there.

How many of y'all have the level of commitment to be the absolute BEST at your job? Do you want to be at the pinnacle of your profession?

On the reverse side, how many are content with doing the work and then bugging out as soon as possible?

There is a shite ton of middle ground here.

How about, I want to be really good at my job, while still being a really good dad and husband.

I try and be number 1 at everything I do. I have been number a peak performer often being number 1 not only at my location but top 5% performer in the entire company.

I run my own business. I inspire to be the best at what I do (physician) so that I take the best care of people and also by doing so make more $$.

Depends on your definition of a pound of flesh. I'm at a stage in my life where I'm no longer looking to climb any more of the corporate ladder. I just want to do my job and go the hell home

I just got done with a massive project a couple weeks ago after spending long hours of overtime there. Now, I put in my 8 hours and gtfo right now. I will get hit with something again in the future which will require the same level of dedication.

It's a rollercoaster. Some people go hard 24/7/365 and some people just do what they can get away with 24/7/365, and both are bad imo. You only live once.
