I went ten years and through about four lawnmowers since my Lawnboy died. And I do maintenance too (change oil, filter, and spark plug out). Just cheap arse brands out there that are built to last a few years and that's it.
Then I bought a Honda. It is not only as good as the Lawnboy was, it's better. Go with Honda.

Honda or Kholer engine. Either will be reliable. Don't think your Honda lawn mower engine is a finely crafted Japanese product. Pretty sure they are built by another company in China to Honda specs and branded as Hondas. The Kholers are just as good without the price premium.
Eta: husqvarna makes a great, reasonably priced deck. If it were me, I'd probably go with a Kholer engine on a Husqvarna deck.

I used to have problems with my lawn mowers, but several years ago I started putting Stabil in the gas can.
Have not had trouble since.

I have a little red Toro self propelled mower that is a beast. It's the best little mower I've ever owned.
