Found a self-propelled Briggs and Stratton branded mower at Wal-Mart. I've seen their engines for years, but had never seen one like this before (black and yellow). Had more features than most others at that price point. Spent less than $300 and hoped to get a few years out of it. Has been a great lawn mower. Bagger, rear wheel drive, 4 wheel adjust with one handle, variable speed, water wash out port, large engine. I've got a large yard, and works great. Sure beat spending a grand on a Honda at the time.

Pretty sure that is the one I mentioned. Yellow and black

Anything with Honda engine. Get it off of craigslist or some other used sales platform. Saves money.

That's it, you're right. Forgot it's name is Brute. That was a deal for what it offered and it runs great.

The frame really don't matter as long as the motor on it is a Briggs & Stratton

Honda makes a damn strong motor too

Get one with a Honda engine. I have a Husqvarna with a Honda engine. I pull it out of the garage after a long winter and it fires up on the first pull every time.
Even with old fuel with no stabilizer.

I have the same, and same results.

I replied to the OP without reading the thread.. Y'all are right, you can find really good mowers for a cheap price if you go off brand AND they have a Briggs & Stratton motor on it... A lot of off brands come equipped with them and with proper maintenance they can last you a LONG time

Nothing's better than the old school snappers.. I've worked on some that are from the mid to late 90s and they still run great because they're so simple

Another honda user here. Prob 7-8 years old. Starts on first pull except for last weekend. It took two pulls. I use regular gas w/ethanol, no additives. Minimal maintenance done. Maybe changed the oil every other year. Might have changed the spark plug and air filter once.

I will do a round of maintenance when it gets warm to hopefully get her back to one pull starts.

^ what's a brill? I've been drinking sorry if I'm not as sharp right now

I cut yards on the side. I can refer to info in here

I've used Honda motors (husqvarna as mentioned earlier) and Briggs and strattons and typically the Hondas last longer and run better

Same for me; self propelled 4wD Husky with Honda motor and it's been a single pull starter for 3 years now. Just use good marine gas and not ethanol and your golden.

Briggs, Kohler, Honda, etc. are all good engines. Ethanol gas will destroy them all, however.

Put a little bit of oil with the gas to lubricate. The ethanol dries everything out

I have a snapper rear wheel drive about 15 years old - I replaced the engine about 2 years ago original body.
Snapper isn't the cheapest but I prefer the rear wheel drive

Troybilt with Honda engine at Lowes around $329 for TB 230.

Honda overhead cam not overhead valve like Briggs.
More efficient engine.
I like valve on fuel line you can shut off fuel line and run carb dry if you store it.

Briiggs has a lot more issues and valves loosen over time plus carbs are more sensitive to ethanol fuel.
Seen a lot more Briggs 1 to 2 yr old in the shop for valve issues while Honda I rarely see them in the shop.
