Those are carabiners. Your friends likely havent climbed any swamps up to sea level in awhile.

Definitely a carabiner. I've heard them called D-rings also.

Just saying, didn't make that up.

Moat of the times I've heard them talked about people called them "hiking clips".

I hike and climb. You do not need carabiners when hiking. However, a lot of people call them "climbing clips" or just "clips".

Why can't it be both a carabiner and a metal clip? After all, it is metal and does clip.

It's still a carabiner. It's just kind of shitty and heavy in my opinion. Not something I keep in my rack. Only real use I can see for it would be belaying. I like the Black Diamond oz

I don't know anyone that climbs with an ovul, but yes it is technically a carabiner.

Guess I was just trying to make a point.

Black Diamond are the only clips I have right now. I lose them like crazy though.

The pic in the OP is definitely not a D ring. Some carabiners are shaped like a D and are called D rings.

The pic shows a carabiner that has no locking gate and is made of aluminum. It should never be used for climbing or any kind of overhead lifting.

Aluminum and steel wear differently. Aluminum can hide stress or cracks that can cause failure. Any application of a carabiner involving something you value should always be locking steel.

The tiny, aluminum key clips that people use for key rings are still carabiners.

You like arguing about technical names for climbing gear with people who live a long arse way from any mountains?

OK.

Carabiner - the technically correct name and also four syllables.

Clip - one syllable and most people in Louisiana use them to clip keys together, not climb mountains.

You are in a pointless heated debate.
