I'm not a car guy but I have a question

This morning I stopped to get gas. As I was getting out of my car, a newish Ford sedan with gangster rap blaring pulled up on the opposite side of the gas pump as me.
This blonde girl in scrubs (nice body, had those big arse sunglasses on so I couldn't make a great assumption on her overall OT rating) gets out of the vehicle, keeps the door open so the music is really loud, and proceeds to pump her gas.
When she was finished, she got in the car and took off. She had pumped her gas with the engine running, which wasn't evident the entire time because of the music. I have always been told this was extremely unsafe so this unnerved me a little. Am I wrong?

Yep. I never turn off the engine if someone is in the car. Except at Costco. They are serious about you turning the car off.

You are lucky you didn't spontaneously combust because you sound like a flamer.

My wife did that once. But I made sure it was only once.

Not sure about the safety implications, but I consider it pretty damn rude to run your car where people congregate. No one wants to inhale your car's exhaust.

What does the type of music or how loud said music was have to do with your question?

I always turn off the engine, but it's more out of habit than necessity.
How do you know she didn't turn off the engine but leave the electronics running?

NASCAR style.
Ford, rap, and pumping own gas. Those are major deficiencies in overall rating.

she might have had the engine off but left the eye in the ignition so the power stayed on

That's what I was wondering.

To me, it's about as necessary as airplane mode while on a flight.

It's an old wive's tale. Did thee entire place blow up? Of course not. Sam's will make you cut the engine off when pumping at their stations, but will not make you put out a cigarette. Which is postentially worse?
ETA:
With all the safety precautions of NASCAR, and the high flamibility of their gas, wouldn't you expect them to have the same requirements of this were a real safety hazard?

Because I observed her enter the car, put the car in gear and go. There was no starting of the engine when she was finished nor was there a break in the music for the ignition starting.

I never turn it off. I usually leave my door open and sit to enjoy the cold A/C while my gas pumps. YOLO

Texting at the pump is 100 times worse than leaving your car on while pumping gas.

ETA: 5 downvotes? Further proof this place is full people that don't know shite about anything.
