If they're truly homeless and hungry, I'm sure they don't care where the food comes from. If they're faking the homeless gig, who cares what they think?

You always hear about people giving panhandlers McDonald's bags and then seeing the beggars throw it on the ground pissed off that it isn't money, but the ones I've seen at corners always seem grateful for it, even splitting the food with whoever else is out there.

If I were homeless I would tell you that "I don't eat sweets" and ask for some money.

I never realized there is a difference.

Panhandlers make a living begging off of people, and are usually sedentary.

Vagrants et al. travel and...uh...'forage' for a lot of their sustenance.

I saw a guy get out of his truck and hand a homeless guy a coke and a 6" subway sandwich... He just threw them on the ground infront of the dude.

So to clarify and answer Chicken's question, before he offers the bread to a street person he should ask the guy, "Are you a panhandler or a vagrant?"

The other weekend, the lady and I had a to go box full of fried food from Praline Connection we were planning to give to a homeless person under the bridge in Nola. Well, we somehow couldn't find one on our way back home and she was angling to get out and search for someone to hand it to. She had had a few adult beverages, too.

That's where I had to draw the line. She was mad for a bit, but the way I look at it I saved her from being murdered.

It's hit or miss.

Panhandlers in NYC can make six figures.

Had this very conversation with a group of friends a few months ago following a lunch in the Warehouse District while enroute to the WWII museum. We took a big bag of some very nice NOLA leftovers from Butcher and asked a legit homeless guy (non-panhandler) if he was interested.

The dude thanked us profusely and was face deep in the box before we got to the next corner.

I think the posters who differentiate between homeless and panhandlers got it right.

would hold out for Leidenheimers.

I'd be a discerning homeless person.

And don't try to give me that touristy debris BS from Mother's. Parkway Roast Beef all the way!

If people are begging for money with the excuse that they are "hungry", they should take it.

99% of them are lying and want the money for booze or drugs.
