If you had to give a family a gift worth $1000

And you knew nothing about the family, what would you get them?
** non-cash, not a security or bond or any such thing. A gift that you buy in a store or order online.
The objective would be to get them something that they would keep and not return for cash or exchange for something else.

A TV. No one is going to be upset about a brand new tv.

How hard up are they for cash? They'd probably sell a TV or electronics if they are.
This is hard. I'd still probably do, like, a 55" TV and an iPad.

Is it for a less-fortunate family, regular family, an OT-type regal family?
Age makeup and number of members would be helpful.

Would be helpful at turning this into something it's not meant to be.

A $1,000 donation in their name to the Human Fund.

If it's a less fortunate family and you don't want them selling it for cash....why not find out which electric company they are with and who's name the bill is under. And then deposit $1000 in their account as a credit. They won't be able to sell it or exchange it and for several months they will at least know their electric bill is taken care of.
ETA:Also....unlike a nice tv or electronics....it is also something that cannot be stolen from them if they live in a rough part of town.

Actually, the economic situation of the family should be of importance when deciding on a $1000 gift. Why buy them a tv if they can't afford cable or electricity? If I were in that type of situation, I would much rather someone give me a grocery store gift card or gas card.

Gifts are voluntary. If you have to do it then it's a fine or a penalty maybe, but it isn't a gift.

The obvious answer is cash but for your caveat

Since you know nothing about them, not one single thing you could get is necessarily a gift they can use or that wouldn't be a duplicate.

OK, this just makes the whole post nonsense. If you know nothing about them, there is nothing that you can buy that they will keep regardless of their situation.
Poorly thought out hypothetical, IMO
