Unless you're close friends with the person, simply "pretty good, how about you?"

I'm pretty much the same way. I don't really want random people to get into my personal business if I'm not close with them so I give the usual "can't complain too much." But if I'm semi-close with them I say exactly what I'm thinking.

quote:

My problem is I've always had a borderline Asperger-ian aversion to bullshite. I cant help but be honest and it almost physically hurts to blow smoke.

I'm 100% this. Sometimes I'm way too honest, almost to a fault. It's the reason Larry David is my avatar. For good or bad, I'm almost exactly like him.

Its that whole thing that makes the question, IMO, inconsiderate.

I don't think it's inconsiderate....sometimes people just don't know what to say to someone else when they're approaching them.

shite my son had open heart surgery and only 1 person knew and he KNEW not to tell anyone else.

No one except your mom wants to hear your problems. Keep that shite to yourself.

I usually either say "it's going well", or "it's going" with a laugh. I'm not going to burden anyone with my issues, as I'm sure they have their own issues that I don't want to hear about.

Either the normal response or "still on the right side of the grass" / "still breathing". No one wants to hear about your problems.

If you want to make it weird, say "not good" or something similar.

Most foreigners think the American way of saying "How are you?" as hello is strange as hell. They don't understand why we ask a question we don't actually want an answer to.

But, unless you're socially retarded, it's just part of our culture. How are you? Fine.

I'm only responding to you because I'm sitting on a toilet in Harry Potter land and the name hogwarts seemed fitting for the moment.

Carry on.

When somebody responds with their problems, I write them off as a complainer. Nobody likes a complainer.

They also think we look like lunatics walking around smiling at strangers.

I'm just being nice, I don't really want to know how you're doing with a 5 minute response on how you're actually doing.

I'm heard multiple times that this is an American thing, and Europeans are taken aback by it.

And when you think about it, it is kinda stupid.

"Hey, just wanna get nice guy points, don't really give a frick about you really. Just join in my lie in pretending that I care so you can make me feel good about myself. frick your feelings though. THANKS!"

Anyone who I want to know what is going on I will tell without them asking how things are going. Anyone who asks that and I don't want to know, I lie, say great. Acquaintances don't really give a shite.

The only middle-ground I have found is co-workers. You spend alot of time with them, you like some of them, but its a hazy line of how personal to get. It depends on exactly what is going shitty too I guess.

"Surviving"

or

"Livin' the dream" (usually in a sarcastic tone)

"Don't tell your problems to people: eighty percent don't care; and the other twenty percent are glad you have them." Lou Holtz

That being said:
In a good mood typical day "I'm good, how about yourself?"

In a sarcastic mood "I feel like I've been beaten with a bag of dicks, but not in a good way."
