I'm 29 years old and call everyone sir or ma'am, just because I was raised that way. I'll call a 4-year-old sir or ma'am, someone my own age (even ones I'm somewhat friends with) sir or ma'am, and elders sir or ma'am. I can't imagine what else I'd refer to them by?

I am kind of a hypocrite with this. I don't use Sir with my Dad and never have. For him it's always been Daddy or Dad, but I do use use it with others older and younger as a respect thing. Especially in a professional setting at work. Now with friends children especially my best friends 3 girls. I have had to tell them and their Dad they shouldn't address me as Sir or Mr. It seems so impersonal when dealing with family and old friends.

My dad will freak out if anyone calls him sir. He'll tell them their an arse kidding loser. I generally refer to everyone else as sir or ma'am but the idea of using it to my parents is horrifying to me.

I'm 56 years old and respect the guys at work who call me "sir". I do not call any male in the office "sir". Screw them. It's all about respect.

Exactly. My boy's probably too young to understand the nuances to it though.

You sound more like General Patton than Dad. Next time just say, "good luck kid, have fun" and leave it at that.

You lighten up with him, he'll lighten up with you.

You don't call anyone in your office sir? You say you respect the ones that address you like that. But you won't do it?

I say it to pretty much anyone older than me except my parents. My parents never really wanted us to say it to them but we're strict about saying it to grandparents/ friends parents/teachers/etc.

I still call my boss and people at work who I'm over and are older than me sir, ma'am.

Quite honestly I would never hire anyone or promote anyone to any management level position who said Yes Sir in a "work environment" as it shows weakness and subservience. If I'm looking to hire a mail room clerk then I'm okay with it but I would fire you on the spot for saying that in front of customers or other management.

Ditto.

And he was still in when I was enlisted myself. So whenever I interacted with him in a military context (rare, but it happened) I had to address him as "sir", anyway.

I still call him "sir" to this day. I'm 50, he's almost 71.

Same here, 25 and my company just hired two 22 year old graphic designers and they keep calling me sir/mister and it feels absurd.

Oh, you're one of those parents that don't like to interact with your kid, and cry when score is kept at a game.

Yay for more kids not ready for real life.
