I drove from BR to Amarillo, TX yesterday and to Santa Rosa, NM today. Before Dallas, I-10, I-49, & I-20 were just like I-12, people flying and 18-wheelers & slow drivers in left lane. Once I got through Dallas, I took Hwy 80 for the most part to Amarillo and I-40 to Santa Rosa today.
The speed limit is 75, and for those 600 miles, I saw two cars hauling arse. I set my cruise control at 77, and would slowly pass people and get back over. There was never anyone in the left lane. Every once in a while, I would see a truck in the left lane, but he was just passing and quickly got back over.

I am simply amazed how great the system works when every one does it correctly.

It probably helps that almost nobody lives West of Amarillo. It's an easy drive, and surprisingly pretty. But it's desolate.

You are not lying. We are staying in Tucumcari tonight. This poor town is 80% shut down. The only revenue is a little tourism. We couldn't find shite to do, so we drove to Santa Rosa (which looks to be 50% shut down)

Maybe 287 as well, but I seem to remember Hwy 80 (not sure)

I just looked, it was 287, edited in title

I was wondering. I do that drive every once in a while between here and Dallas. The only difference is that at Amarillo I head towards Raton, NM. I didn't remember any Hwy 80 and was wondering if I had missed the best route to go.

Anyway, that road is my idea of hell. It's the only one I know of that can compete with I-70 in western Kansas. You're right about the drivers but it helps that there aren't many of them.

I think I confused it with another hwy that shares it for a good distance, hwy 80, or 83.

I always enjoyed that trip. I'd stop in Quanah Parker every time . And then I'd head north in New Mexico up the Raton pass and North up 1-25.

Also I think US-80 runs parallel to I-20 for quite a ways and crosses it in several places. So from S'port almost to Dallas you probably saw exit signs for US-80.

Incidentally, another option that is longer in miles but not much different in time is to go up to OKC and take I-40 to Amarillo.

Made that drive many times on the way to Glorieta and Santa Fe. Lot of nothing out that way but Santa Rosa, NM is a beautiful little town.

You took 287 after Dallas.

I love that drive up 287 to Amarillo then through New Mexico. Taken it many a time going up through Raton and into Colorado. I love getting to Raton and seeing the mountains and that tiny little RATON sign up in them.

I80 in Western Nebraska gives them a run.

I've yet to experience that one myself but I have no doubt that you're right.

Made that trip 2x, Alexandria, LA to Napa, CA, via I-40. Once past Dallas not much to see.
