Under what circumstances would you recommend the installation of a variable speed blower?

To reduce humidity. To keep the furnace or heat pump from starting with a full speed blast of cold air. More efficiency.

Other than that, frick saving money.

I thought there was a delay just for that reason?

I'm interested, how does it do that better at low speed than normal speed?

I'll believe that after I read your reply.
I am no a/c homer, just like the OP, wondering.

Just thinking, they have recently introduced a split type of system that all the a/c people are pushing. Apparently they are very good and can fluctuate from 1.5 ton to 4 ton. The problem is they are big time money as compared to other units, plus I'm told them demand cleaning often(which most homeowners won't do).
Time will tell.

I have quotes from two different Trane dealers. One recommends variable, the other does not. The one who does not points to the fact that we are keeping our current ductwork.

No real info from me, sorry.
If the duct work is OK why would they quote you otherwise?
Where're you located?

I am located in Charlotte, qNorth Carolina. Home was built in 1970 and there are two rooms in the front of the home - lower level - that are cooler or warmer than the rest of the home.

Yeah, that's a recipe for disaster as far as I'm concerned. You can never really be comfortable unless you have control of each floor.
Perhaps that's what the difference is, we did a home that had individual thermos in each room with one unit total. High end, but no complaints.
Good luck, I'd like to hear back when you decide and live with it for a while.
Was in the Highlands, NO A/C to be had, period!

Zoned without variable sped or no zone with a variable speed would be your recommendation? Know you have limited information to go by.

Zoned at any price or configuration for a multi-floor installation.

If you have the money, then variable speed blower on a single speed compressor for increased comfort and dehumidification.

Multi floor systems rarely work well based on one system without zoning.

Carl at Southeast Heat and Air just put a new 2 phase in my house. Before, was sweating my arse off, and miserable on hot days. Now, haven't had a problem all summer.

I like the variable because the humidity stays under control, and the high speed doesnt kick on until it's really hot outside. Lower utility bills.

4 ton was about 8500 with new ducts, new everything, great warranty.

I waited for 4 years to pull the trigger on a new unit, only regret is not doing it sooner. Zero complaints. All Good.

Unimpressed and would avoid.

From what I've seen the longevity of these systems is not nearly as good as traditional units.

I would especially avoid any "new" version of these systems.

Splits make sense in certain applications, but b/c they can be easier and faster to install, they get over-recommended.

Variable all the way.

Bumped with an update. Two firms came in within a couple of hundred dollars of each other and are know for good service and installations. Same configuration, warranty and Seer rating, but one installs Trane, the other an offshoot of carrrier - Comfortmaker.

Who would you go with?

I have Trane at the office and have been less than impressed, but the installer is somewhat to blame. These units are also 10 years old.

I have Carrier at home (Infinity with Greenspeed) and am very happy with it.

IDK anything about Comfortmaker.

Is that just the model of the Carrier unit?

Just recently heard somewhat bad things about Trane, Comfortmaker has been around forever and is a offshoot of Lennox or vice versa. The word out here from people I know is as of now it's a crap shoot.
I'd go with Trane and hope for the best. It's not my field BTW, just relaying info.
