Gentlemen of the OT, I appeal to your knowledge on humidors.

Any recs on a desktop humidor? I want to stay away from the cheap ones that aren't airtight. But also one that I don't have to plug in.

Boveda - Humipack

unsure on your choice of actual box, but I use these to keep up humid. they send them every so often so I know it is time to replace. I actually need to renew my order.

They have acrylic boxes if you want see thru.

I have a classic wood humidor- wish it was bigger

I wish you well on your search. Without research or facts off the top of my head, I can only offer you a couple "rules-of-thumb" :

Hinges: look for what's called a "piano hinge." That is the hinge runs the entire width of the box. Many cheap humidors are made with small hinges at each corner, leaving the back side with a gap.

When you close the lid of a well-constructed humidor, you should perceive it sealing shut. You should hear a slight "whoosh" sound and even be able to feel air coming out as you close it.

After that, I'd suggest taking your time before purchase and evaluate the ones you see. There's a wood, or a painted color or whatever for everyone's tastes. Many of the major catalog/online cigar retailers will sell humidors; get a good look at as many photos as you can to at least be able to see the hinge.

High end: Daniel Marshall and Elie Bleu make really good desk-tops; even Thompson Cigars sells nice ones. But try Famous Smoke Shop or Holt's as well. Bob Staebell and Aristocrat make great humidors, also, but many of these are larger than regular desktops.

Enjoy the journey, it's enjoyable, as is the quest or need for cutters and lighters

Get a good 100-150 stick box. You'll always want more space, but 100-150 should be plenty to buy a box or two and still have space for individual sticks.

Find and use a good Hygrometer.
Use some Propylene Glycol solution and/or packs.
Cedar lined is the only way to go.

I was saving the hygrometer and humidifier talk until he actually got the humidor.

I erased a lot before I hit submit.

Ok, OP I've bought several different humidors over the years. If you could provide a little more detail as to what you are looking for, we could be of way more assistance.

My buddy got an amazing Ammodor for Christmas. It's an ammo can, lined with cedar, fitted out with a shelf. It seasoned in one day, and the seal is unbeatable.

I built a shitty one down range and if worked great. This one puts the one I built to shame.

Let's talk humidifiers, then!

I assume the slightly moist paper towel method is perfectly acceptable.

Only for temporary storage when traveling maybe. I have a small humidor that I can toss in my bag though. Really, the humidor itself matters much less than one's willingness to maintain it. Cheap digital thermo/hydrometer and Cigar Caddy gel jars go a long way no matter what you store them in.
