I've thought about this question occasionally and think most of what we take for granted would simply be incomprehensible to even some of the most educated. As someone once said, it would be indistinguishable from magic.

You probably couldn't get any of them onto an airplane, but they'd be amazed at modern roads and cars. Might have some luck getting one on a bike but they'd wonder what happened to all the horses they grew up with.

I second the motion for plumbing. Also a series of visits to a decent dentist. Hell, even just a light bulb.

Give him a history lesson of what happened since the mid 1700s.

Then, talk about modern flight, the automobile, electricity, the phone, and television.

Then, begin to let him see the world.

He would need context.

And, doritos and a coke.

Let's go further back from the 1700s to ancient Rome.

People during the time of the roman empire would think the human race in 2015 has transcended to veritable gods and transformed earth into something like Asgard from thor.

We've grown taller, bigger, life expectancy is astronomically high compared to ancient Rome, we can be anywhere on the planet in less than 12 hours when it would take them months to a year, we can transplant body organs and defeat the most seroius ilneses and injuries when there was no medical care but fricking herbs and wine, we can build college stadiums that are a couple hundred times bigger than the roman coliseum, we can vaporize an entire city off the map without deploying troops when they had to deploy legions upon legions with just swords and arrows.

The USA would be seen as something like Thor, his people and Asgard to ancient Rome.

I'd think of how I'd like to be acclimated if I went 265 years into the future.

For someone from 1750 British Colonies, language shouldn't be a huge problem. Might be some dialect issues but overall you should be able to understand one another. Clothing would also not be too big of a leap.

I'd hit the high points of history between now and then - American independence, the Civil War, Flight, the Internal Combustion Engine, Space travel, etc. widespread Electricity, Radio, Television, Computers and the Internet.

Then I'd try to find some broad documentary type things on either the internet or the tube to give a bit more in depth info on things then maybe concentrate on things they were interested in.

I'd definitely explain about the abolition of slavery before I took the person out and about.

From what has been posted here so far, I'm sure the visitor would have a major cognitive breakdown. Not much of what we have today would make sense to somebody raised in the 18th century. For instance, modern supermarkets or fast food restaurants...

Well we've got a great many laws that no one understands so we pay a group people a lot of money to explain them to us and sort things out. Then a different group of people get paid a lot of money to make new laws so that the first group can make more money explaining them to us and sorting those out.

I would sit him down in a recliner, pour him a stiff drink, and show him school house rock to get him caught up to date.

It would depend on their station in life back then. It would be easier to acclimate a more educated person than it would be to introduce all of our technology and history to say a subsistence farmer from that period. The uneducated person may think it's all witchcraft and have a nervous breakdown thinking we're going to steal his soul.

You do realize that the Coliseum seated upwards of 60,000 spectators, right?

The Roman Circuis Maximus race track seated upwards of 200,000 people.

The city of Rome had over 2,000,000 citizens (not counting slaves) at its ancient peak. It has 2.7 million today.

The Romans would scoff at our lack of progress in that regard.

Take a Roman to a LSU game and he would be confused why the Gladiators have colorful armor and are not fighting with weapons but rather throwing a ball to each other.

My serious answer to this would be to sit him down in a room with very little in it. Just a couple of chairs, a table, a pitcher of water and a couple of glasses. Maybe a deck of playing cards.

Then we would have a conversation about what happened since 1750, and some of the things and technology that's changed.

I would show him some books and pictures first.

When he digested that, I would tell him that these days, our pictures move. And start showing him video.

The floodgates open from there.
