How would you handle this?

Just had a conversation with a coworker about her son.
Her son and 2 of his friends (all of whom were 18) were at a high school party. Her son was the designated driver and drove the two friends home in the friend's car. On the way home, he got pulled over for burned out headlight and was ticketed. It wasn't his car, but since he was driving he was ticketed. The friend's parents were notified and they are refusing to pay the ticket.

The person who owns the car should pay for the ticket

That's fricked up. Do they know the friend was driving because their son was drinking?

Let their son get a DWI next time.

Coworker or son is going to have to pay it, but tell the son not to hold it against his friend. He can't help it if his parents are douchebags.

Yes. Yet they still refused to pay the ticket.

Find the cop who wrote a ticket for a headlight being out and whoop his arse

If he's 18 he should be able to handle it on his own. That being said, if the other parents don't pay for it, his friends should. And if his friends don't, I'd say he should make some new friends.

Tell my son to pay since he didn't follow the first rule of driving: always check your car to make sure everything is functioning properly.

Of course, I'm not sure enabling young boys to get wasted is a good deed. But whatever.

Slash tires....only reasonable response

Unless the cop was an absolute dick, kid could have probably talked himself out of the ticket but I'm sure the talking to a cop game is weak with 18 year olds.
Parents that won't eat the ticket are assholes, not to mention the buddy that won't stand up and do right.
Move on and get better friends.

if he's 18, his parents don't need to be paying his arse is old enough to pay.

Friends parents should make their drunk son pay for the ticket. Make him do chores to earn it if he doesn't have the cash. The kid who was ticketed was doing their kid a solid by not letting their kid get a DWI.
Then whip his arse for underage drinking. Yes, it happens, and not that big of a deal, but don't condone it, especially when driving is involved.
