Called a plumber today when my shower knob stripped with the water still on and the only way to shut it off is turning off the whole house. Fun morning.

Well, when he was here, I pointed out some cracks in the grout of the tub area connected to the shower since he mentioned he could help with general household upkeep. He poked around and asked to take a look outside. There were a few cracks in the foundation in the corner of the house where the shower is. He thinks the tiled in shower or tub is leaking. Told me to check the cracks after showers. Well, after I showered this afternoon, it's pretty much confirmed. Who knows how much rot is back there and I'm pretty much going to have to redo a shower and tub . I'm hoping this is under 5k.

I'm in Houston. He fixed the valve stem. It was stuck and I didn't want to break anything. Only reason I had to call. I literally had the whole thing apart waiting for him to pull the little cartridge. Still set me back $250 for a Sunday call, but at least it works now.

The cracks in the grout have been there and I've been meaning to call forever (probably a year, I'm lazy). Cracks in the foundation are small and we're noted by the inspector when purchasing the house. Said it didn't look major. More seems like the leaking shower pan is just finding it's way to the edge of the foundation then leaking out along the cracks. I'm hoping on the small end, it's just redoing the shower and tub. Hoping this isn't some major foundation issue. I would hope insurance would come into play at that point.

Along with everything else you'll need to fix everything. If you own a home, you should learn how to DIY. Expect the plumer to make a profit just like any other business you buy shite from.

Homeowners doesn't cover foundation issues.

Building a shower pan is usually not something you want to mess around with.

I don't think it will be 5k. Foundation cracks are not always as bad as they seem. Cracks in the corner of the slab are actually quite common.

However, tearing out and redoing tile could be $2k or so depending on the job, but that would be a nice tile job. But you need to get it torn out and correct the leaks before the problem gets worse without a doubt.

I do a lot myself. I've put in all my own flooring at my other house, I've run wiring when needed, I've hung door frames, installed dishwashers, etc..
The valve cartridge was stuck. The reason it stripped. I wasn't getting too rough with it and damaging it more. I'm not even remotely worried about that issue.

It's the other issue I had him look at that I care about.

Is you home on a slab?? If not you should be able to see if there is a leak just peek under the edge and see if there is water dripping.

If it's just the grout that's cracked and or missing in spots, then it likely just needs to be regrouted. If the tiles are cracked then that could be a bigger issue, but not necessarily.

Without seeing it, it's hard to say how much you'll have to tear out to fix any rotten wood behind the shower. But I'm sure OP can fix that to save money.

Buy the material pay a sub (insured) $2sqft to do the job

Plug the drain and let the shower run. Go outside and see if it is leaking. My father is a home inspector and does it on every house he inspects. If it has a metal shower pan, it will leak eventually.

honestly, I would seal up the cracks in the grout of the tub/shower area and call it good...no need to go fricking rebuilding the whole damn place, IMO...
