How much experience are internships worth

I assume that the average collegiate graduate has worked at least one internship. However, due to corporate interns being competitive and limited based on economy, isn't it obvious that most people won't have one (or at the very least, a quality one).
However, I never understood how internships were viewed in early career hiring. If an entry level job is 2-3 years experience, then wouldn't that be more than the typical graduate has. Interns are typically only 3 months. Even a motivated kid will at best only have 6 months of internship.
Unless the person was Co-oping during undergrad, I don't see how accruing a solid 2 year experience was feasible. Especially when the average student is working minimum wage jobs during their collegiate years.
Are internships automatically rated as 1 year of experience based on student status? If not, how are they rated.
I feel like this problem is just another preface that too many people are in college.

Internships are valuable for contacts/connections you make within the industry. A strong recommendation carries more weight than anything you gain in the classroom. When I was interviewed for my first job out of school they never one time asked my GPA. They were more concerned about industry background and internship experience.

An E7 doesn't need internships.

Depends on career path I'm sure. With IT people they're worth something to me when hiring. It means the person has seen at least some of the reality of the business we're in.
From my personal experience, I was an intern and that internship improved my grades because I got real world experience. But it was a continuous internship. I worked 20 hours a week for them when I wasn't at school. But I was still called "stupid fricking intern".
So when I interview entry level people now days I see an internship as a conversation piece on an interview and a plus coming in the room before the interview.
You assume too much by the way. I see many people who haven't interned.

Trying to find a job that pays nothing now, eh?

Your odds of getting hired with a good engineering internship on your resume are 90%, 70% with the company you interned with. Odds without an internship are around 30-50%, so a crapshoot. It's not everything, it's damn near the only thing that matters unless you have a 3.8 gpa.

My three internships actually counted towards my time (9 months) and grade with the company for pension, vacation, and other benefits. Not to mention the experience and ease with which I was able to get a full time job there.
For clarification: Interned at the same company I ended up getting a full time job with.

Did you work for IT or were you in some type of business related profession

I would consider them absolutely essential for premium job placement after college.
I personally haven't come across many coworkers that gave graduated within the last 5-7 years that haven't had one.
I had about 12 months of full time experience in my field prior to graduating, and had my pick of offers well before graduation.
It's worth it so long as something meaningful is accomplished.

Internships are often more important than GPA (unless you're summa cum laude) and definitely any extracurriculars. My internship supervisor recommended me to the big boss, who outright said that was the biggest factor in offering me the position I currently have.

From my life's experience, it is 1000x easier to get a job if you have a job already

Basically it is a cheap audition for companies to not necessarily see if you can do the work (great if true), or at least take instructions and guidance and learn how to do the job. At the minimum, they can see if you show up at work on time and sober, not look to get out of work, etc.

invaluable.
there is so much about "who" you know and not "what" you know to get yourself started.
