I have one, strictly for emergencies and paid off asap if used.

1 for everyday use. (NFCU Visa)
1 that I have never used, but did balance transfer at 0% (small fee) a couple times when big expenses arose.(discover it card)
1 that I only use for hotel rewards (Chase IHG card)

Probably about 8, I only use 2 regularly though. Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Freedom.

2 Southwest cards for the 120,000 points and companion pass (paid my rent two times to get that).
1 Chase Freedom which I used before my Southwest card, I don't touch it now.
1 Citi Simplicity card for a balance transfer that i no longer touch.
1 Banana Republic/Gap/Old Navy card which I pay off every time.
