How long do you wait to send thank you email for job?

Trying to give advice to a younger guy.

He said his pops told him to send a thank you the same day.

I am telling him to wait 24 hours or at least the next day.

That way you can think of something you might want to add that you forgot in the interview. Gives you a chance to reflect.

What says you.

Thanking them makes you seem weak. They should be thanking you.

I've done both. If it's a morning interview I think it's okay to do that afternoon. If it's a afternoon interview I think the next morning is good.

Wait at least 2 days. He won't to seem to eager and it gives them a chance to think about him.

And this is just ludicrous.

I don't see a reason to wait. I think a manager would prefer a quick response. It just reflects better on the young man to be pro-active and responsive.

Nothing funny about that in this day and age. You think snail mail is ever going to make it to their desk, much less get read before they've made a decision?

Just give an "I preciate ya" as you leave and save both parties the time and trouble of writing and reading it. I've never been one to send a thank you follow up. I know it is considered a good thing to do by many, but the way I see it, they were paid to sit through it, and I was there on my own time. They should send me the thank you, and little something for my trouble if you know what I mean.

I usually include this somewhere in my two weeks notice.

Agreed. You don't know how quickly he will be making his opinion of you. Relatively quick response gives you the chance that it could put you over the top if he's still making a decision on you.

That's what I think.

I think 24-48 is professional. Before makes it too eager.

I had a potential employee email me from his car -like I could literally see him emailing me - after the interview.

That was a nonstarter since it showed he didn't even think of anything to add to the interview.

I would send a real letter by FedEx the same day so it gets to them 2 days later. It will make it to their desk and is way better than an email.

I wrote a thank you letter to the lady that did my interview for Samford University.

She emailed me when she got it saying how thoughtful it was.

I now go to Samford University.

Drop handwritten thank you letter in a mailbox after the interview. Write at Starbucks immediately after.

Be sure he makes it clear that he's not looking for anything long term and just wants to have fun right now. Drives them crazy.
