How is saying "drugs destroy communities" any different than "guns kill people?"

Drugs don't destroy communities, junkies do. They're the losers/low lifes who create the demand.

The whole point in doing drugs is to alter your mind. Quite different than owning a gun. Also drugs can develope a dependence over time leading to more drugs.

It's not, people are the problem. They've always been the problem.

Never thought of it this way, but I think it is an interesting point. I think the war on drugs is retarded but stuff like meth should still be illegal IMO.

Drug abuse is bad.

Gun abuse is also not good.

Good talk.

Look at why "guns are bad".

Is it because they are used in violent crime in areas drugs have destroyed?

Why have drugs destroyed them? Is it because they provide a release from the pressures of responsibility?

People have ALWAYS found a drug to escape. Religion. Politics. Crack. Meth. TV. Internet. Sex.

Always will.

Some drugs are worse than others. I've never seen a person rob someone to get a hit of Jesus. But that's because some drugs don't have a physical monetary cost.

But it's all about being high.

It's why people adventure. Explore. Skydive. Go to church. Get into campaigns.

We want to FEEL! We want something more than the mundane!

And these addictions are what feed us and drive us. Some people like to make tons of money. They work work work. Some people like to drink. Some like to blaze a joint. Some like to have dirty filthy raunchy sex.

It's all about what gets us off.

Whether your nut is that big bonus after a deal. Or an 8 ball. Or that hot chick at the bar. A boat ride. A school play.

It's about drive.

If the path to riches is through drugs in a community, those who desire wealth will seek that path. If the path to escape is through drugs in a community, those who desire escape will seek that path.

There are myriad paths to fulfillment. Some dark, some light, and a thousand grays between.
When you criminalize a path, you make criminals of those who would seek it.

We live in an age of gunpowder. And so guns are the means of the power. It would be knives and bombs if they didn't exist.

Most drugs at some level take away self control to varying degrees. Some people's minds are functional. Some become absolutely dangerous to everyone around them. Guns are inanimate objects.

false equivalency

drugs biologically modify your body

you choose to begin use, you don't choose to continue use.

but the war on drugs should end regardless

Wow. You actually serious with this comparison? I've never once met someone that used a gun a few times and then became so hooked on it that it cost them their job, family, or health.

How often have you heard " Yea he is actually a really good guy and very talented. He had the world by the balls until he got hooked on that gun."

But the drug dealers are the ones selling it to them(junkies), Which make the junkies unproductive, steal from people, lazy, etc. The drug dealer also kills other people that want to sell it because it costs them money=drugs destroy community.

Drugs only harm people if they let them. Well adjusted people don't get to the point where they suck dick/rob people for crack money. Drugs can be severely abused just like guns, but they don't have to be and typically aren't.

Drugs themselves don't cause poor parenting or other social ills. Just like guns don't kill people. It's the people who abuse them (guns and drugs) that "destroy communities." Again, they're both inanimate objects.

Full disclosure, i don't really care about the communities that are "destroyed."

LINK

The above link is an interesting description of the Portuguese model. Portugal used to be very tough on drug laws and enforcement. I'm not sure how I feel about decriminalization outside of marijuana, particularly as it relates to the US vs. a tiny culturally homogeneous country like Portugal, but it's definitely worth looking into.

There isn't a community on earth where drugs don't exist. We just look at one community of drug use different from others.

I'm not trying to discourage the conversation, but this really isn't about legalization. I just think it's awfully lazy to blame everything on drugs, but guns get off scot free.

To be clear, i fully support the 2nd amendment. Ar 15s and all.
