I would really be interested in good advice.

If everyone is at work, the day goes off without a hitch and peacefully. When people miss work (often) it comes back on me.

Today, several people took off work and and several of their time sensitive responsibilities fell to me. I already had a very large time consuming project for the day. That's just life, whatever. But to get it all done, I had to work at breakneck speed switching between realtime projects sometimes 4-5 times an hour. And I got frustrated and annoyed and and my quality wasn't as high as I expect from myself.

Unless you're just getting started and needing to work your way up, or there is some super nice/pay incentive....

pretty simple

work as hard as you can without draining yourself

if you are having to do other people's work so much that it's hurting you, talk to your boss.

Otherwise, I'd get my shite done, then work on the people's who didn't show up. If it gets done, it gets done. If not, oh well

but that's just me

I make a list of everything I need to do from most important to least important. I cross them off as I go. Crossing them off gives me small victories and I keep chugging along.

I work through lunch at past quitting time

I understand that it's out of my hands and I can only do what I can do

Thankfully so does my supervisor

A failure to plan or be responsible on someone else's part does not constitute an emergency on my part!

I'm in that position right now on one of the biggest projects I've ever had to deal with, using far fewer resources than would be typically required for this kind of effort. A couple of folks came down with whatever flu-like virus is going around. Others are taking the "I'm salaried, so I'm done at 40 hrs" approach. I'm putting in long hours, giving it my absolute best effort, and planning to have a long talk with my boss when it's over. It's not a sustainable lifestyle unless you have no wife/kids. If there weren't an end in sight for what I'm doing, I would be at total burn-out right now.

The best thing to do is to take care of yourself out of work, so that when you go into work you are refreshed, happy, and focuesed enough to deal with shite like that.

Smoke weed, read a lot, excersize, be outdoors, get layed, and hang out with your friends.

Talk to your direct supervisor.

Don't rant and rave or show frustration. Tactfully list out your projects/initiatives and ask him/her to prioritize them. Once he/she does, politely ask where carrying your absent coworkers load falls into the priority list. He/She will either tell you it doesn't or will pay closer attention to the stress it causes you.

Past that. It's on your management. Sometimes they aren't in position to add further resources and/or release useless employees. But will remember you for being a team player.

Singing to myself.

Also, just embrace the challenges. If it gets to be more than one human can reasonably handle, let your superiors know before a decline in your work quality ensues.

But it's mostly attitude. Be glad you have more on your plate than you know what to do with as opposed to being bored out of your mind at work.
