I swat her on the nose if she won't listen to a firm 'no'. Sometimes pretty hard if it's the second or third time she's doing something. It almost never gets to that though. Normally just a pop on the nose will do.

I didn't beat them like a rented mule. Just slapped their asses a couple of times to get my point across. It was nothing gratuitous. Just a few licks to make my point.
Judge all you want, but they've been well behaved, well disciplined dogs ever since. They come when called, kennel on command, and don't venture near the road. I'll take that any day. Whispering is fine the majority of the time. But occasionally you have to get their attention. It must've worked, cause I only had to do it once.

Don't have too. They were disciplined when they were puppies.

That's exactly how my German Shepherd is. I just tell him to go under the kitchen table. That's his punishment spot.

My dog hates the newspaper. I roll it up and tap him with it.

This.

It makes lots of noise and doesn't really hurt the dog. After a while all I had to do was slap the newspaper on my hand and they knew I meant business.

Threaten him by telling him I'm going to make him go live with Legendary0903's mom if he doesn't behave.

Works every time.

I like to use a sack of valencia oranges... It won't leave any bruises and it lets them know who is in charge

Wow lots of ignorance in this thread. If you know anything about training a dog, you'll know that positive reinforcement is all you need. Ever. The owners with the most well behaved dogs are the ones who have never once scolded or hit their dog in any way. That's not even me being a liberal PETA type, it's just not effective. If you reward your dog when they perform the behavior you want, they will VERY quickly associate the behavior with reward and it will become ingrained in their brain. Just from a psychology standpoint, it is much harder for your dog to figure out that they're being punished for their behavior than it is for their brain to draw the connection between a delicious treat to good behavior.

Don't think I've ever beat much less swat my dog . I guarantee you he'll obey me like he understands english . Started as a pup . Beating will mess a dog up .

While everything you said is true most people don't understand the patience and time it takes to train a dog. People look for the laziest way to keep a pet.

Me personally I don't hit dogs but I also know how to train them and spend months working with them until I get the behavior I want.

Once I establish myself as alpha I can let a dog know I'm upset with a look and they will cower and lay out if the way until I command then to come out.

My step dad used to run the K9 unit for 15 years until he retired. He trained and broke horses his entire life. Both animals are very similar.

I don't know about that . Horses could see right into me . It's like they knew exactly what I was thinking .

I just tell him no in a firm voice. No physical abuse necessary. He's an 85 lb lab. If you feel the need to hit a dog to discipline him, that says more about you than him.

My dad had a friend in Mississippi that was Chickasaw . He had several horses that would obey hand signals . It was like a circus act watching him . A horse could sense I didn't know what I was doing as soon as it saw me .
