Wow lots of ignorance in this thread. If you know anything about training a dog, you'll know that positive reinforcement is all you need. Ever. The owners with the most well behaved dogs are the ones who have never once scolded or hit their dog in any way. That's not even me being a liberal PETA type, it's just not effective. If you reward your dog when they perform the behavior you want, they will VERY quickly associate the behavior with reward and it will become ingrained in their brain. Just from a psychology standpoint, it is much harder for your dog to figure out that they're being punished for their behavior than it is for their brain to draw the connection between a delicious treat to good behavior.

Let me guess, your kids walk all over you as well? I know a lot of trainers and self proclaimed dog "experts" say no negative punishment, but let's be honest, it works and dogs love you just as much. I'm not about throwimg haymakers at the dog, but a slap on the butt or nose goes a LONG way. My current pup (8 weeks old) is a hunter first and a pet second. I will put him through some very strenuous situations over his lifetime, and I need assurance that he will respect me and listen to me from an early age.
