If that's steady state cardio (little change of pace over 30 mins) then you're basically wasting your time.
I wouldn't say wasting your time. If you mean that intervals are better than I agree with you, but going for a 30 minute jog is still good cardio.

Steady state cardio is helping him build cardiovascular endurance and still burning calories. High intensity intervals are more effective but any movement above you routine is beneficial.

Add some wanuking in your routine

So I eat 1500 calories a day with only between 50 and 100 carbs daily but healthy carbs. I cut out all sweets, dairy, wheat, breads, and do a low fat no sugar shake for breakfast and then two of those as snacks. I eat healthy lunches and dinners.
I then do 30 minutes of cardio a day burning around 230 calories then about an hour of weight lifting afterwards. I do this 5 to 6 times a week with one or two rest days. Plenty of water.
that calorie intake is fairly low if you are doing that much exercise, but if you are shooting for a goal then stay at it.. Once you make it you could take in a few extra hundred calories just too maintain.
But it sounds like you are doing everything right. Keep up the good work. Like everyone said there is no spot reducing.

Actually, if he wants to lose more than about 8% of bf...which it sounds like based on his metrics...then he needs to do more steady state at this point, and almost no interval.
When he gets within three to four percent of his goal, he should switch to interval. Interval works great, but losing that much bf is easier done at those high levels with steady state.

just do some crunches or maybe find a routine in a fitness magazine

I would also recommend doing your cardio after your lifting, on an alternate day, or ideally in the morning before eating. If you do it before you lift you will not be able to lift with quite the same intensity.

Diet is key to losing weight. And as mentioned, can't target, so it takes time.
Congrats on the weight loss. At 5'6", you have a ways to go. Don't focus on areas/visual, focus on progress and strength/fitness/feeling. The scale isn't always your friend either, as gaining muscle will not cause you to lose weight on the scale.
I'm also 5'6", goal weight is 158.

He's trying to burn fat and build muscle, yeah? Steady state is a waste.
And mouton, you honestly give the absolute worst fitness advice of anyone on the OT.

with how much weight he still has to lose, steady state will be better. then add in HIIT when he gets closer.

How do you figure that? Post workout caloric burn is going to last much longer after interval work.

Really? Obviously HIIT is more effective but you honestly think steady state is a complete waste? It will not reap health benefits? It will not help him shed fat?

What bad advice have I given? Please cite examples.

The ab excersizes will build up abs, but only way to get them to show is to cut more fat. Unfortunately for most people that lower belly fat is the last thing to disappear.
More cardio
More cardio

Yeah, but the calories burned are going to be higher during steady state due to his high BF%. ETA: He isnt going to be running HIIT at a maximal intensity.
Look if the guy was at 10% and wanted to get lower I'd suggest HIIT. He's likely somewhere around 17% right now, steady state will help build a foundation where the HIIT is going to be maximally effective when he gets to like 12%.
