We had to yesterday he was 17 yrs old failed kidneys, liver and was losing vision. He went down in a matter of days. Its tough on us my first dog, just want to know how long before the pain go away. I understand it was better for him it just was so abrupt he went to the groomer Saturday and put down yesterday after the vet said nothing they could do and it was time. We have one more thats 15 years old, just feel empty at the house. Never experience this smh

I may be heartless but the lead up to it was always worse than doing it and afterwards. I just kinda felt that they were now out of their suffering and was happy to give them peace after a lifetime of being my buddy.

I got a cat.

Needed a change from dogs and I’ll be damned if I’m not just as attached to this cat as I was the previous dogs

Sorry to hear that, I had to put down my buddy I had all thru high school and college a few years ago and it was one of the worst days of my life. They're family and best friends all tied into one. It gets better plus I like to remember all the funny good times we had over that one bad one.

Sorry about losing your buddy.

We took a small break, discussed what type of breed we would like to try next and started doing research on our next family member.

Starting over with a puppy def helps with missing your old friend but of course never fully makes it go away.

Here's hoping you find the next great pup sooner than later

I walk out of the vet, kick a tire on my truck and drive home.

ETA: too many times now

Cried alot and drank alot, sometimes at the same time. I still miss both of mine and they've been gone like 6 and 3 years respectively.

Get another. No point in denying yourself over self made guilt. Dogs die and it sucks but move on.

Everyone is different. Some will say get a new puppy. But time will help and try to stay busy. Much like the poster above, the grief and sadness I felt when I brought mine in to be put down was much worse than days after it was done.

To make it to 17 and be put to sleep peacefully when they are in pain is as good as it gets for a dog.

I would say to cry as much as you want, remember the good times, and know that you cared for a life as best as you could from birth to death.

I'm sorry for your loss.

Dogs don't deserve to suffer, and you know they would. The loyalty of a dog is unmatched. Your wife, kids, friends...can't match the unconditional loyalty a dog has for it's owner. I'm at about year 3 on my first dog, and it's going to crush me when the time comes. The only way to cope...is to get another dog...and hope it works out.

It’s brutal even though it is for the best. I kept feeling I had done her wrong. Time and a new puppy have helped me through it.

We had to put our little girl down a little over a year ago and it was rough. It was her time. I miss her like crazy, she was 17 so she was in my life for a large chunk of it. My wife keeps mentioning that she wants to get another dog but I'm still not ready

It is one of the worst things I have ever dealt with and did it twice.

I am now 58 and cannot fathom owning another dog and having to do it again. My wife and I love dogs but 2 years later we can't bring ourselves to get another one.

My only advice is....

1- Your dog lived a blessed life because they had you as their master. Hold on to that.

2- Only time can help.... but it will never fully heal. We just have to carry it.

3- Don't beat yourself up with regret.

I would definitely get another dog. Dogs sort of mark the stages of one's life in my view. New dog, new memories. It's not replacement.

Same here, even though the vet persuaded me it was time. Wish I had him longer.

I had to put my girl down a bit over a week ago. I went to work the next day and just fell apart when I got home. Got a new girl too. That helped a lot.

Had to put my 15 year old greyhound down 5 years ago . I cried and when I carried her out of the vets office a guy purposely blocked me in . I completely lost my grip . Didn't take him long to move . I cried when I buried Jim b rocking robin . Awesome couch dog who loved long walks .
