How did we all know to fix NES cartridges as kids in the 80s/90s?

We didn't have the internet and I never saw a magazine article saying blowing air into a Nintendo game cartridge would help the console read it, but everyone I grew up with knew this workaround.
You're telling me millions upon millions of American kids just figured this out on their own with no medium to share it yet everyone knew about it?
How?

I saw an article in Readers Digest. That’s how I found out.

word of mouth
I'm from a small town in Mississippi. I knew 10 kids in my neighborhood growing up. There was no word of mouth from the outside world.

Tribal knowledge passed down from elder elementary schoolers.

We used to have to wedge a skoal can on top of them sometimes to get them to work.

Ok, well this makes sense. At least some form of media was putting the information out there.

Video game magazines existed (and still exist)

Did it really even work?
frick yeah it did.
If blowing air into it didn't work the true fix was inserting the cartridge 95% of the way and then forcing it down. That shite was money.

I had a subscription to Nintendo Power back then. I never saw an article about it.

The other fix I used was inserting the cartridge just barely enough so that you could push it down into the console. That seemed to work more than blowing on the end

Nintendo Power is the goat

The special editions that had a full magazine walkthrough of games like Final Fantasy were the absolute best

Because we used our brains. People are stupid today and don't have to think.
