How crazy do you have to be to fly through a hurricane?

shite..that's actually at the top of my bucket list.

Somehow, someway...I wanna fly thru the eye of a Cat 5 hurricane with the hurricane hunters.

Second on the list is to chase an EF5 tornado...from a safe distance.

Not that scary. For the most part the wind is fairly constant in a hurricane. Just some heavy precipitation.

Scary is penetrating the top of a thunderstorm at 35k+ ft. with shearing wind and violent up/down drafts.

They started this in the fifties with piston engine aircraft, and they had some dicey moments. Since they've gone to the more powerful turboprops, it's been a lot safer.

Being a hurricane hunter is originally what got me interested in meteorology (my major). Sadly I can't join in since I'm color blind but I'd give my left nut to go into one one day and take readings.

Makes sense, you seem to know some about it, so a question I have. What is the purpose behind a prop plane vs a jet plane in a hurricane environment?

NASA started flying jet powered Global Hawk drones into hurricanes last year, so there's evidently no intrinsic reason for turboprops. Maybe that's just the most suitable airframe available. There are a lot of C 130's in service and they're durable and versatile. Global Hawk

From the wing and cockpit shots it looks like NOAAs P-3. I don't know much about hurricane hunters, but the turboprop might be better for certain data collection missions, like being able to fly lower and slower for longer periods of time. NOAA does have a Gulfstream but I think it's used for measurements above the storm

Flying above a storm versus through it are two different things.

A) The Hurricane Hunters fly through the storms.
B) If you can't see the difference between the purpose of a commercial flight and hurricane recon mission, then I don't know what to tell you.
