I mean it's kind of true, isn't it? The brain drain. Get educated by Louisiana, move to Texas.

Getting rid of brains altogether is certainly one way to stop a brain drain

The brain drain will just happen between high school-college level if you're actually being serious

Exactly, TOPS gives them an easy discounted (or free) college education and then the better job offers are coming from Texas.

Louisiana jobs need to start making competitive offers. The LSU grads moving to Houston/Texas area are motivated by the $$.

- A new, simplified tax code for businesses
- Tort reform
- Delegate more power to local governments like Texas does

Absolutely, and Louisiana is not the only state that has a problem with it. Figuring how to keep those grads in state is obviously the hard part

What La jobs can offer competitive money to begin with...

Hey move here for an extra 5k! Oh btw, it will cost you 10k more to deal with the BS that is La and god forbid you have a kid! Instead of free ISD public schools you have to now pay private. So I guess that extra 5k is about 20k short to be anything meaningful.

To fix education, Louisiana should use Colorado's model and start selling recreational marijuana.

Why think small? Recreational heroin would fix all of Louisiana's woes.

And we're back full circle to: sell recreational marijuana -> Make taxes from it go to public education -> eliminate necessity of private schools (eventually).

Obviously much more will need to be done than this, but it could be a start in the right direction.

Physical addiction certainly would help sales. It worked for Coca-Cola, right?

This.

How many jobs are there in LA that provide a salary of 60k-90k and are not related to Petrochemical? There is no diversification of industry here.

Legalize prostitution

Probably not the best idea. A published study in 2012 discovered that countries with legalized prostitution have increased human trafficking.

"On average, countries with legalized prostitution report a greater incidence of human trafficking inflows."

"Criminalization of prostitution in Sweden resulted in the shrinking of the prostitution market and the decline of human trafficking inflows. Cross-country comparisons of Sweden with Denmark (where prostitution is decriminalized) and Germany (expanded legalization of prostitution) are consistent with the quantitative analysis, showing that trafficking inflows decreased with criminalization and increased with legalization."

Basically the girls are forced into the "legal" channels of prostitution and give their profits to pimps, and they will never admit it out of fear for their lives.

LA has some of the lowest costs of living in the US.

I agree that you need to keep the best educated students, mainly LSU grads and Tulane grads in the state. Why are they leaving? Better job opportunities. Better pay and better companies. We need to get more of that in the state. IBM was a huge win for BR, we need more like that. Think of how many finance and accounting student leave LA to go work at a big 4 accounting firm, how can we not get at least one of them to have an office in BR? LSU has one of if not the best internal audit programs in the country? Thats fantastic and all, but whats the point if they all go work in Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, etc?

Honestly we need a couple of our businesses to grow and become Fortune 500 companies.

The changes we need will take a generation to achieve and will involve some hard choices. Both of these are things most people in this state are not interested in.

The schools are getting better. It will take a generation to see a difference.

And we have got to get the crime under control. Stop pissing around with weed and go after the real criminals.

I have a new coworker that moved here in January from New York. Against my advice he bought a house in Bywater. His car has been broken into 5 times in less than 2 months. He's ready to move back to NY.
